Great art, not so great gameplay

The art style is so spot on, it's insane. Its remarkable how authentic it is to the period it's inspired by. However, that's the best thing it has going for it. For a cross between a platformer and a shooter, this doesn't do a great job. It's very unreliable and imprecise. In a genre where pattern recognition is of high importance, this does a terrible job of making patterns and telegraphing them. I don't even find the game all that difficult, but instead, it fealt cheap and buggy. I want to like this game, I really do. The developers have at least proven they can make a beautiful game so whatever they come out with next, I'll pay attention. But this game was a miss for me.

Dead Space (2008)

Great game, but very buggy

I've played through this before on console and loved the game. Hopefully the rest of the series will come to GOG.com at some point in the future. However, the port of this seems to have been rushed as it's lacking quite a few options noteably borderless window mode. The color correctionbuilt into this is pretty lousy as well, with bright or slightly less bright being the only options. Its buggy as well as there is an invisible wall at the very first door, that I don't know how EA even managed to miss. The fact that this game has been out on GOG for a few years now and that hasn't been fixed shows how much EA really doesn't care about the game. Its really disapointing and it's no wonder the series didn't get the sales EA demanded of it.

Decent

The art style is nice and easily the best thing about the game. It's only hampered by the rare framerate dip and audio glitch. The gameplay is a bit too linear and simplistic for my tastes given that the only thing the player ends up doing is some climbing and light puzzle solving. The game world is also presented a little inconsitently in that some climable ledges are marked while others are not and some creatures are harmful sometimes but not others. The story on the other hand was the worst part about the game. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely appreciate the themes the game is attempting to tackle here, but it does so rather nonsensically. The player's motivations for many of the actions they take are... just because. I'm not trying to spoil anything, so I'll just say the switched perspectives doesn't seem to make any sense and only appears to happen to make things extra emotional. It's going to invite comparisons to similar games like Journey or Shadow of the Colossus, which is both good and bad. On the one hand, to even be held in the same light as those games is pretty impressive. On the other, those are some big shoes to fill which it doesn't quite manage to do. All in all, it's an alright game.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

Incredible Game

I had such a great time with this game. I loved the characters, I loved the story. The actual gameplay was spot on and the creativity it allowed was great. My biggest critique is that the last act is a little rough around the edges, but the developers have already announced plans to fix that. I look forward to the update and thus a second playthrough with a different playstyle. I also look forward to a sequel or whatever else the developer comes out with.

BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien

Fun and Quirky!

I really enjoyed the game. I originally bought and beat this on the Xbox 360. So much so that I decided to purchase it again on the PC now that I no longer have a 360. Its just as much fun as I remember! The levels are challenging and the music is nice! The quirky art style grows on you. Such an odd sense of humor as well. The only thing I wish it had was achievements. Maybe in a future patch, but I suspect that all development has stopped on this outside of any game breaking bugs, of which I have not encountered any. I very much recommend the game!

Fantastic story and atmosphere

This is such a great game to get immersed in. The atmosphere is so dark and moody and makes you nervous about everything around you. Something happened in the game and the environment really makes you want to know what it was. The story's mystery is excellent, and once the answer to it is revealed, it continues to hold you attention and never lets up. I eagerly anticipate the next game Frictional comes out with as this and Amnesia really turned into some of my favorite games. My one and only beef with this game is how poorly it seems to perform. Though, not poorly enough to keep me from playing it.

Pillars of Eternity: Hero Edition

Great RPG with a single drawback

I always loved CRPGs like this, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Planescape, etc. I truly missed them when they seemingly stopped being made for a while there. I was so happy to see them reappearing from various developers. Not only are they making a comeback of sorts, but they are good. This one in particular is pretty great! I liked the story and loved the characters. I did feel like the story ended sort of abruptly. My biggest gripe with the game is that the combat it realtime with pause. I've never enjoyed that style of play. Thats what I'm knocking the one star off my rating for. I wish Obsidian would switch to turn based combat for their games. Maybe in the future. Even if not, I'm sure I'll get whatever else they make.

Hyper Light Drifter

Beautiful art/music, great game, short

I love the artstyle. The music is fantastic. The animated cutscene is amazing. The gameplay is great. It's just really really short and feels like its lacking in content. Its something that could be a real contender for topdown Zelda games, but for whatever reason, the developers decided not to go that far. The animated cutscene that is in the game is so good and you expect to see more, yet you just see the one over and over again. Really not much to complain about here. Its a very good game, but it could have been so much better. And, yeah, I found it pretty disappointing that the devs didn't make achievements for the game when they are there for the Steam version.
