Syberia

Amazing adventure full of poetry

This adventure is a serious one. No hyperkinetic rabbit or purple tentacle trying to save the world. You play Kate Walker, a lawyer, who embarks on a simple journey to complete some work about a toy factory... which seems to be more difficult than foreseen. Discover a world full of poetry and automatons in this truly wonderful amazing game. The puzzles are logical and the great story is supported by gorgous visuals and good voice acting. Note that this a two-part story: Syberia 2 is needed to complete Kate Walker's journey.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

An amazing 2d platformer

This is truly a great platformer. The Oddworld universe is amazing and full of details. In a serious context (there are going to be killed and transformed in pies !!!) the game creators inserted a lot of humor. The graphics are good as well as the music. The game is quite hard some times. It is even harder if you try to save all your people as there are some secret places: difficult to find and difficult to complete.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter

Brutal but so good

This is not a game about precision and brains... except that if your enemies had one, we could see a lof of them fly in the air while you kill them. This is a brutal FPS which mostly follows the same pattern: - Enter a room - The exits are sealed - Kill all the monsters - The exits are clear, continue to the next room No need to think or solve puzzle here, all you have to do is shoot. As we progress in the game, we encounter WAVES of ennemies (sometimes more than one hundres) and, in these cases, it is necessary to determine the best weapon for the job. If you need to decompress or relax, play it. It is fun and allows you to disconnect your brain a bit before going back to normal life. Also note that there is a story in the game and it is quite enjoyable.

Prince of Persia®: The Sands of Time

Best platformer ever

Prince of Persia was known as an old-school 2D platformer when Ubisoft decided to create a new Prince of Persia game. They did an amazing job at creating a new game from it: - Great platforming system (many spectacular moves) - Interesting story, more developed than the original Prince of Persia - The sands of Time allows to rewind a bit in the game in case of death or accidents... this really remove all the frustration of miscalculating a jumb or making the wrong move during a combat Combat are mostly fun but this is not the focus of the game. If you like platformers, then you NEED to play this one (and the rest of the trilogy but for that, we need that Ubisoft releases it on GoG).

MDK 2

Great third-person shooter

This is the sequel to the action-packed MDK. This time we get to play three different protagonists : the dog (shoot, shoot, shoot), the professor (solve "puzzles") and, off course, Kurt the janitor (shoot but also more platforms). This offers some variety in the gameplay during the story. The graphics & music are great during all the game and we cant' wait to continue playing the game to eradicate the alien menace. As a weak point, I would say that it is sometimes difficult to discover the weak spots of bosses but this is often the cases in such games as it would be too easy otherwise.

Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

A great story, but really old school

Beneath a Steel Sky has a wonderful story set in a futuristic city where things are not as great as it seems. Embark on a journey with Robert Foster, a man who lost his mother in a helicopter crash and who doesn't know his father, to discover his origins. This is really an old-school adventure game as the story and dialogs are brilliant but the gameplay did not age very well as something it is really hard to know what to do next. As we progress in the adventure, we gain access to more zones of the city in which it becomes difficult to know where we should go next to progress in the game.
