It's 1942. WW2 is in full swing. The Nazis have invaded most of Europe, and without your help, they will take over the world Commandos 2 and 3 are two of the finest games I have ever played in my time as a gamer. You control a team of commandos in an epic struggle against the Third Reich. Don't be fooled; though you may be a crack, intelligent and strong squad, things can still go awry.... Immediately, you're plopped onto the batlefield, and using observation and planning, you can exceute moves to eliminate your nemies and achieve objectives. The important thing to remember s that Commandos 2 and 3 are not like a run-and-gun shooter; the play must have a high level of patience and the nerve to reattempt a mission after your 3rd go (belive me, it will happen) Through inventories, abilities and tactics, you can do certain things. For example, you can disguise yourself as a Nazi officer. Some characters have special abilities, e.g. the Green Beret is able to swing around walls and use telephone wires to shimmy across. With these, quite obviously, come disadvantages to each character. For xample, the thief will not be able to execute certain kill moves and use sophisticated weaponry. Here's a summary: The Good: -Graphics may not be modern, but they manage to do their job really well and compliment the gameplay (especially in number 3 with its 3D engine) -Gameplay is immersive, deep and challenging -The gameplay offers you several solutions to problems such as either avoiding or killing guards -Varying levels with increasing difficulty -Excellent voice acting which represents each character really well The Bad: -Tedious to a point of screaming-one mistake and you're out -The game lives for the gameplay-this title isn't recommended to people who prefer story-driven games -Micromanagement can be a pain The Ugly: No uglies I'd highly recommend this game to anyone, and it's well worth the purchase for Commandos 2 alone.
Boom! Imagine an explosion, 30 metres away from you. You've now got the guards' attention, but the escape shouldn't be too hard. Green Beret skuls back into the bushes, and the guards are left standing with nothing in sight.....that is until the Marine jumps out and takes them both down Commandos is best described as a mix between RTS and RPG, and in essence follows the gameplay styles of modern "succesors" such as Robin Hood. You control a team of commandos whose job is to disrupt enemy operations behind lines. Your team is comprised of specialists. The gameplay is immersive and challenging. This is not a game for people who are not ready to dedicate a fair amount of time to the game; it requires a lot of patience and planning, as well as a fair bit of luck. However, this can be immesnly rewarding when you have cleared a whoele warehouse of guards without their colleagues discovering their grizzly demise. The main downside to this is that the game is EXTREMLY tempermental; one mistake and you're dead Controls are dandy for basic actions, but are incredibly fiddly to coordinate an attack. Using the mouse, you can control your characters and their items. The keyboard also contains a few handy shortcuts. Graphics are good, but notgreat for modern standards. All in all, patience is a virtue, but if you're playing Commandos, patience is a killer!
Empire Earth is a game with that classic feel of old school RTS. Released in 2001, this game allows you to control 23 factions over 500,000 years of human history, spanning from the Stone Age to the sleek Space Age. With the overview out of the way, here's a list of Pros and Cons: Pros: -Fun, real-time gameplay (good ol' clasic formula) -Addition of interesting features, such as technologies and heroes -7 fun campaigns -Variety of Civilisations -Excellent map editor -3D Engine Cons: -Outdated aspects of gameplay -Unoriginal (mostly inspired from Age of Empires 2) -Actually little to no advance in terms of resource gathering and technology -Only small differences between factions Over the years, Empire Earth has been left out of the spotlight and dubbed an "Age of Empires" clone. However, these same people don't consider that "Rise of Nations" arguably drew its core ideas from Empire Earth. The epic scope will simply leave you amazed-no joke, this game was sooo big in 2001. Literally and in ideas. Depending on your opinion, the gameplay in Empire Earth will either be old, or completely new. Following in the footsteps of AOE, you create a unit, slect and right click. Each unit has certain attributes which can be an advantage or disadvantage. Technology and buildings, however, play a more important part than in other RTSs, as they are the main components required for your civilisation to advance an epoch. There is no complicated way to tell you, so i'll just spit it outt; Empire Earth's gameply is simple but fun Aside from the core mechanics, there is hardly any difference between units unique to civilisations. Much like Rise of Nations, these unique units may boast better HP, but aside from that and the unique look, there's a limited amount of diversity. However, the same cannot be said about the campaigns, which are just a thrill to play through. In terms of graphics, the game is modest. Personally, the 3D engine compliments the game, but let me just say that if you want realistic graphics, I suggest you go outside! Another boon of the game is the level editor. This game, if any, got me started on level editing. The editor is so easy to use (with a little help from the manual), in the sense that the things that are the most complicated, e.g. cinematics, events, are really simplified in this editor. Or if you're just looking to wreak some havoc, it's great for that too!! All in all, Empire Earth is a good game, however, the play style and graphics may not appeal to gamers in 2009. Despote this, I highly recommend this game to people who still enjoy the classic formula with a big slice of EPIC added to it!
