Jade Empire: Special Edition

No brainer

There is nothing not to like about this game. It is a mouthful of wildly imaginative, splendidly playable, smooth-running, drool-inducing brilliance that you'll never want to end. Seriously. Go get it. This is how "epic" is done in the gaming genre.

Banner Saga

Breathtaking

This is a wonderful RPG set in a bleak world, where the gods themselves are dead and all meaning and purpose of history with them. This epic setting is well reflected in the plight of your characters, who face irrevocable consequences with every decision. It is a brilliantly immersive experience, well worth every penny, and more fresh and original than possibly every new game this year. Such games are worth owning, and Stoic is a developer worth being supported.

Freespace 2

Hit it

Sci-fi fans, action lovers, guys who crave epic plans from outer space - this is an awesome, packed game that seemed to have no weaknesses whatsover. You will fly a wide array of ships with different, yet easy-to-manage armaments. You will command your wingmen. You will learn to micro-manage your craft in combat, or you will just smash that fire button and fill the evil destroyers of the universe with holes even they cannot repair. You will blow things up. We're not talking yer olde li'lle booms here. You will blow up ships that are over a mile long, and when they go off, it makes exploding planets look like cheap fireworks. You will blast your dogfighting enemies into pieces that bounce off your cockpit, and hear your wingmen's "Impressive" on the radio soon after. If you are not interested in the fine complexities of the game, you can tune the difficulty and enjoy it as a great shooter. If you are a die-hard geek, you can download endless more missions and mods by the game's community. Get it now, and be prepared to totally immerse in a space pilot's world of guns blazing, missiles wheezing, people screaming orders, people screaming for help, and pilots dodging. Don't forget to dodge...

Wizardry 6+7

Pure Madness

A blast from the days past, when some games were unbeatable without either a step-by-step guide or hundreds of hours sunk into them. Wizardry 7in particular stands out as one of the most epic games in scope, and only the most determined players will ever beat it. I could not, despite more than a hundred hours of playing, but I still had incredible fun. Nothing today offers a comparable experience. Nothing at all.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Complete

Excellent game, steep price

The game is a high quality product, with some decent writing, not overwhelming complexity, and less-than impressive graphics and art concept, which are however made up for by excellent spell effects and very, very atmospheric lighting. The storyline of the first adventure is a bit generic, but truly RPG in leaving you a lot of options of tackling the problem, large enough in scope, diverse in tasks, and allows recruiting (and playstyle) of either a good or an evil party. Mask of the Betrayer is absolutely, emphatically BRILLIANT and brings a gorgeously epic storyline with multiple endings, a shocking plethora of epic character skills and spells, as well as a decent romance, and is, in fact, all a fantasy RPG fan could wish for. My only objection would be that the game is far from new and at 20 bucks not exactly a terrific deal. At 15, it is a good buy, which will keep you entertained anywhere between 30 and 100 hours.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Awesome, but...

Just be sure your machine can take it. This game has wholly modern looks, but the system performance requirements really are a world apart from the games on offer at GOG. The effects and environs are well worth it, however. Combat can get tough, too, if you do not pay attention to creature strengths and weaknesses. Other than that, it is worth it. Very good RPG with a no-nonsense hero, set in an unforgiving, cruel world, full of both love and hatred, enhanced with a touch of horror atmosphere. Sapkowski, the author of the Witcher series, is an accomplished fantasy writer, and the whole game surpasses your average "kill the beast, take the loot, fondle the princess" scheme, even though all of killing, looting and fondling are present.
