My first one star review, ever. The devs seem to have both made some terrible design choices and left some serious bugs in the game. The game doesn't allow configuration of controller/kbm and is very broken in it's implementation. There are threads about this on steam. There should be a warning that says that only controller is supported. (I'm fine with controller if forewarned, but very few games should require them.) There are save problems where saves randomly disappear. And I'm sure if I spent more time with the game I'd find more issues. As it is, I'm done.
It's brutally hard at the start and it takes a while to learn the rules because the system is deep. But after the early slump, Underrail is fantastic. Some of the best TB combat ever, a great setting, and a big world. There are at least 2 ways to solve most problems, and the storylnie branches several times (as if this should even need to be said about an RPG). The weakest link is the writing, which isn't bad but won't win any awards. If you like classic RPGs, buy it. If you like tactical combat, buy it. It can be frustrating at times, but it's a huge bundle of RPG joy.
It was fun for a bit, I couldn't make it all the way through. The control scheme seems decent at first but the minion AI gets frustrating, and the need to farm some types of life force to make up for the AI problems gets old. Gameplay is about being lead through missions in a corridor shooter style, but after putting some hours in I feel like it was closer to a point-and-click adventure. There's very little strategy either, so it didn't have enough to compel me to finish. It's not bad, though, and the game has a sense of humor, it just wasn't enough to keep me interested.
I was curious about Don't Starve but skeptical about how well it was executed. Now I know: it's an excellent game with some of the best rogue-like qualities and a huge amount of character. The crafting system is well-thought out and fairly deep. There are a lot of surprises in terms of both crafting, item interaction, and creature interaction. It's challenging, rewarding, and fun. And the game has tons of charm that we rarely see from the big publishers. It's a great game, one of my top 5 for the last few years.
