This game crashes. A lot. The game is good / fun but it crashes so frequently as to be almost unplayable. Right before writing this review I attempted to start playing it twice and it crashed both times before even finishing the first turn. Just get Imperialism 2. Which is an improved game anyway, and you won't have the issue with it crashing constantly. You might need to download some 32-bit C++ stuff to get rid of an error message about a missing .dll (at least I did) but once Imperialism 2 works, it works.
