Kathy Rain

Decent adventure

Fairly decent adventure; graphics and voice acting are very good. Characterization could be better but the main character and some minor characters (e.g. Kathy's friend Eileen) are interesting and likable, and the dialogue is mostly well-written. On the negative side the puzzles aren't bad, but mostly aren't anything special either and solutions are often too obvious...in this Kathy Rain compares unfavorably to some of the more complex Wadjeteye's games like Resonance or Technobabylon. Number of locations is also rather limited. Weakest point for me was the story which is some weird mystery nonsense that seemed rather uninspired to me and didn't make much sense in my opinion. Still, if you like adventure games, this is a worthy effort and I'd recommend it. Would be nice if there was a sequel, I'd like to see more of Kathy Rain.

Shardlight

Good game

Pretty good adventure game with an interesting setting - would be nice if it got a sequel -, was fairly enjoyable and is well worth the full price. Compared to some of Wadjeteye's other titles like Resonance, Technobabylon or Primordia I'd rate this as somewhat weaker though. Puzzles are a bit too easy in my opinion and in the 2nd half of the game you're mostly limited to a few areas at a time. Replayability is also rather low, there aren't any achievements or multiple solutions for puzzles. Still, if you like adventure games and have enjoyed other titles from Wadjeteye, you can't really go wrong with this one. Recommended.

Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™

Flawed classic

I played Monkey Island 2 back in the mid- to late 1990s and I remember that I didn't really enjoy the game that much even back then. Having purchased it again on GOG and played through it, I have to say my opinion hasn't changed. Many of the puzzles are just painful, with illogical actions required and hardly any hints given. The "adventure game logic" typical of adventures in the 1990s abounds. I feel this has been much better handled in some more recent adventures like Resonance or Technobabylon. There's been real progress in the genre and I don't think Monkey Island 2 has aged well in that regard. I found its puzzles a frustrating experience and frequently had to use a walkthrough or the newly implemented hint system. I also didn't enjoy the story that much. Whereas Monkey Island 1 had a certain charm, there's excessive fourth wall-breaking in Monkey 2 which is pretty immersion-killing for me. And the ending is downright bizarre. I mostly played with the original graphics, but on the whole the remastered edition seems to be okay to me. Voice acting wasn't bad, I liked Guybrush's voice and thought the actor did a good job. Monkey Island 2 is deservedly a classic, but don't be fooled by all the "Best adventure game ever" nostalgia. This game can be very frustrating and IMO just isn't that well-designed in some parts. Certainly worth a buy, but don't exspect that you'll invariably enjoy it, even if you like adventure games in general or have even played Monkey Island 1.

The Shivah

Too short

Is an ok adventure game, but really too short. Will probably give you about two hours of gameplay at most. I also wasn't really sure if the rabbi you played as was really that likeable, he seemed rather intolerant. Decent effort for an indie title and could have been really good, but as it is I feel it isn't worth the full price. Grab it for a bargain price if you want about an evening of adventure gaming.

Icewind Dale 2 Complete

Decent but not without flaws

Icewind Dale 2 is probably the weakest of the infinity engine games. It's not without its strong parts, you have a lot of choice in creating your party, there are some limited but nice role-playing possibilities besides the relentless combat and some sections of the game are quite excellent. The early part of the game is great, you're fighting in a war against hordes of orcs and goblins, this part of the game really feels fresh and is good fun. However the later part of the game is often rather boring and tedious. The story is weak. And the combat can be insanely and frustratingly difficult. It's still a decent game but not as enjoyable as the other infinity engine games.

Primordia

Good game

Quite a good adventure with an original setting. Only drawback is that it's rather short. A sequel would be great!

Resonance

Good adventure

Decent adventure, the puzzles are all logical and of generally high-quality. I didn't like the way the story developed, that's why it only gets four stars from me. But the gameplay is very good.

Commandos 2+3

Not as good as the first game

I've only played through Commandos 2 and have to say, I don't think it's as good as the first game. They added tons of new stuff like flamethrowers and smoke grenades for your men to use and the levels are very, very large (though there are only ten of them, plus two tutorial missions and some minor bonus missions). But the designers seem to have been over-ambitious and the level design suffers from this. Unlike the very difficult but immensely fun first Commandos game, Commandos 2 isn't very challenging, even on the highest difficulty setting. But it gets boring and tedious very quickly and becomes a rather mindless slog through the overly large levels. After the brilliant first Commandos game and its excellent expansion Commandos 2 was a dumbed-down disappointment. I haven't yet played much of Commandos 3 apart from the demo version but in some ways it seems to be even worse, with a clunky interface and time limits on the missions.

Commandos Ammo Pack

A true classic

Played this back in the late 1990s and recently bought it from gog and played it again...was somewhat surprised how fun the original Commandos (and the expansion pack) still is. The gameplay is simple yet brilliant and the level design is superb. Pretty much a flawless game, though some people might be put off by the difficulty. But if you're interested in this type of game and like a challenge, you can't really go wrong with Commandos 1.
