I used to love both Dark Sun games. They were pretty decent for its time. But the Wake of the Ravager was soooooo bug-ridden that it was frustrating almost to the point of throwing your mouse at the wall. I would like to know then is this version a simple Dosbox repack of the original or did someone fix at least some of the original bugs?
There are two sides to this game. One is storytelling. And while some of my friends consider the story a bit too convoluted, I enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes the game can be a bit frustrating with all those multitools and lockpicks and you running out of them in the important moment. But the general feeling of the game is just great. The other thing is the technicalities. Well, the game is over 20 years old and it shows. The models are very low-polygon for today standards, the textures are so-so, the mechanics can be sometimes annoying. And it definitely pays off to find some mod that lets you play in higher resolution and such. (like GMDX). The streets are not as crowded as in GTA, there are relatively few areas you can get into. But you have usualy several approaches available depending on your style of play - stealth or gun blazing. Overall - if you've never played it before, you might get put off by the technicalities but it's worth getting over this feeling to get through the story.
There are many words that come to mind when you think about this game. "Different" and "strange" are but a few. It might look and feel completely unappealing at first run but it quickly pulls you into the world which could be taken straight from some 90's sci-fi (both in terms of music and visual aesthetics). And it doesn't let you go. The game seems simple - you just walk around and sometimes solve some puzzles. At times it even seems a bit boring (having to go from one point to another through vast deserted polygon landscapes can get irritating). But the whole experience is so overwhelming that you quickly forgive those small annoyances. If your idea of first-person game is limited to alien-hunting, that's not a game for you. If you think that puzzle solving needs fifty pages of words per each puzzle, that's not a game for you. But if you're willing to observe your surroundings and guess things for yourself... Well then the game is definitely for you. Oh, and having at least a bit of a musical hearing does help. A bit. I'm not sure if I'd buy it for the full price but since I got it on a sale with a huge discount I'd say the money were definitely well spent. And i think it was my first non-oldie on GOG. If other indies here are equally good, I'll have to start buying more of them ;-) And one very important thing for me - runs great on my fedora box with wine.
