I geuinely disliked this game past the first boss. I was having a decent time until the next area, then the third. Stun lock attacks, attacks that will multi-hit, drill your character, and run you off ledges, poor platforming sections, pretty useless dodge mechanic. The story - and prospect that you will only get the true ending through multiple playthroughs - just don't carry this one enough for me to want to finish it. I get it, you're trying to be Nier. You're not, moving on.
I think this game was much better back in the day, though I remember some scathing reviews when it came out for what I can only believe is that I experienced in my time with it now. Clunky, weird graphical hangups, really difficult, and overall not very much fun. Might have been better to leave this one in the past or give it the Enhanced Edition treatment.
FINALLY finished this game, had it for years and decided to see it all the way through. The combat is dated/difficult to master, some of the animations and voice actors are wooden, and some of the mechanics don't quite work. Still, great game, excellent decisions to make, worth a playthrough and your time if you're a fan or simply curious about the series as a whole. One weird gripe - collecting cards for women you've bedded. Who made this design decision?
This game has a retro feel and SOME funny writing. Some of it is juvenile and offensive, but that can be overlooked. The game's influences are pretty much out there as you play - old NES games, PC games, platformers. I myself was having a pretty good time with this game until the focus became on my platforming skills rather than my wits. Having to grab ropes or fall to my death and platforming sections where you have to be precise or die really turned me off to this one since the platforming mechanics are so poorly implemented. I'm fine with a game being challenging - I'm not fine with wrestling the controls as part of that challenge. If you can overlook the issues I ran into, I still think there's a lot of fun here.
Played this game religiously back when it came out, some of my first online gaming experiences ever. Hold up well now, but I don't remember it being this difficult - I died three times in the first area in under 30 minutes. One note, don't expect to be able to make a sandwich while it's loading - screen loads are almost instant in this version. Love it. Very happy to have it on GOG.
Flat out, did not enjoy. Disjointed, no decision making throughout. I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of this experience other than it feeling like a 90s mystery thriller. That part was decent and carried me to the end. But otherwise, I couldn't recommend it to anyone.
