Eschalon: Book I

Fun - simple game

Starting can be a little rough, but you never get so powerful that it becomes too easy. It has a decent story.

Battle Brothers

A great game!

This game is a lot of fun, but it does get repetitive. You slowly develop a soldier (brother) only to get him killed or even maimed. I had an archer from the beginning and he lost an eye and couldn't hit anything after that. There is a bit of a learning curve. Developing your brothers according to their strengths makes all of the difference. Visiting bars is important because you have to keep them happy. Armor upgrades are worth the money! My only complaint is that there isn't really any kind of story to it. It is just about building your company larger and more powerful. There is a storyline that happens in the overall world and you can get involved in that a bit. Oh, and the random maps are simply amazing and gorgeous! It feels like a real world!

Men of War: Assault Squad GOTY Edition

Fun Game - Not as good as original

I have both the original Men of War, which I loved and this one. This game adds new units and adds better multi player. The original had a much better campaign for single players with a good variety of missions. This game doesn't do that as well. It has single player missions but they are all quite similar. You move forward to capture the next objective to get better units. AI is good in this game and units act pretty well, with individuals moving to cover where possible. The enemy AI isn't very aggressive though. This game is at its best when playing it with multi player. Still, it is one of the best squad based WWII games around since the original Close Combat game.

Age of Wonders 3 Deluxe Edition

Good game but with some flaws...

I have played the main campaign, and I like it, but it is challenging. I don't like it when they are too easy, but I have had to retry almost every mission multiple times to beat it. The flaw is that it is kind of a nuclear arms race. You have to get to the biggest units the quickest or you lose. The basic units are almost useless after the first few turns. Also, the rules that EVERY hero must survive means that you can't lose any fights in which they take part in. Plus, limiting an army to 6 units contribute to the uselessness of basic units. If you could throw hordes of them at your enemy, then it might even out. This is something that every version of this game has done though, so if you have played the previous games, you know that it kind of works out that way. The good things about the game is that the visuals are incredible. I love playing out the battles just to watch them. The game is strangely addictive, and even though you lose a lot, you want to go back and try again. I also like the fact that there are random games available which keeps the replayability there. I have loved this whole series of games since I found it. I have wanted a good successor to Lords Of Magic, and this has been it. It may not be a perfect game, but it is a good one!

Populous™ 2: Trials of the Olympian Gods

Doesn't play well on fast PCs

This game and the original have captured many hours of my time in the past. Populous I plays fairly well on a PC, but this guy just doesn't. It plays at such a high speed that it is impossible to do anything. I couldn't figure out how to slow it down. If I could do that, then it would probably be a better game than the original.

Stronghold Crusader HD

Good but not great

For the price this is a good game. It is challenging and the AI isn't too bad. In fact, some of the levels are very difficult to get past. However, after a while I just found the game to be repetitive. I played for a while and liked it, but when I was done, I didn't have a great desire to go back. For a low priced game, it is worth it, but I am glad I didn't buy it new.

Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne

Awesome game!

I loved the original version of the game, and this one was different enough that it wasn't just a rehash of the original. For starters in the original game you choose to play as the good guys or the bad guys, and that was pretty much it. In this game you progress through each of the areas of magic using different armies in each game. Your character is more of the king now than an adventurer. You want to keep him in your capital because he can influence your entire kingdom from there. The only gripe that I would have is that I would have loved to be able to zoom in and out on the playing map a little. The cities, and the army icons are all quite large, so it would be easy to zoom out and see a larger playing area if the game would permit that.

Age of Wonders

Great strategy game

This game can be quite challenging, which I think is a good thing. Some of the maps can take quite some time to win. The graphics aren't outstanding, but they are good. The AI is OK, but not outstanding, but it does do a good job of constantly coming after you which keeps the game from being too easy.

STAR WARS™ Rebellion

Great old game!

This is a great old game! It plays well on just about any system. The first time I ran it, the icons all loaded upside down as some people have indicated, but when I ran it again, it worked right. This game is not a quick playing game. On the small galaxy it took me a few evenings to win. Playing as the Empire is a little easier. Your ships and troops are better than the Rebels, but their fighters are better. You also have better officers, but almost no diplomats. It can be hard to trace down those last few Rebels at the end though! As the Rebels, you start very weak, but some of your later ships and troops are quite good. You also tend to have better diplomats, so you can draw planets in sooner than the Empire can. The key to playing them is not to attack until later in the game. Use your Espionage to disrupt the Empire.

STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

Incredible game!

I loved this game so much! I can remember using my X-Wing to make raids against convoys, and charging down capital ships! The gameplay was imersive, and the campaign challenging, but still doable. The graphics are dated and low res, and it would be great to see someone do a mod to update the graphics. X-Wing vs Tie had better graphics and played well, but it didn't have as great of a campaign.
