Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

Classic from the adventure game era

I didn't play "Beneath a Steel Sky" until 2016, so what I'm about to say is not clouded by nostalgia. This is a good game. It's fairly short and it's free. You should play it. BASS (as I'm going to call it) is an old-skool adventure game but one that shows the best of the genre. Adventure games were always about two things - discovery, and puzzles. Some games were better at one than the other. This is a rare beast that gets both. The world is interesting, well crafted and folded out to you piece by piece to keep you wanting to see what's around the corner. The puzzles mostly avoid the bizzare "use a toothpick to win a beauty contest" kind of logic leaps common in this genre, which keeps the game moving and interactive. Still, there were one or two spots I used a walkthrough. Take my advice and do the same, this game is best when it keeps moving. If this were a moden game, people would complain about the (mostly) easy puzzles making it too short (it's about 7-8 hours). Personally I think that is always a stupid criticism; no-one recommends The Postman over Toy Story because only one "gives you your money's worth". But I digress - this game is free. It not only holds up today, but it's a good example of a now-rare genre. Totally worth your time.

Wizardry 6+7

Wizardry VI - Bane of the Spare Time

Wizardry VI is a good RPG of its time. It's "good" in that, for its time, it had a detailed and interesting story, a variety of locations and enemies, and maps that actually felt like they were set out like real locations, not just your computer 18 x 18 grid. The variety of spells, items, classes (and class-swapping mechanic) and monsters also gave it surprising depth to its gameplay. It's "of its time" in that it expects you to grind. And I don't just mean grind through monsters - I mean through EVERYTHING, even character creation (The cluebook seriously recommends that you spend hours just re-rolling stats. Whee). You will be saving and reloading SO MUCH in this game it is not a joke. There is a free utility ("Cosmic Forge") that at least cuts out the character creation grind, but still. I recommend it anyway because its depth of play and variety really make it stand out as a quality early 90s RPG. And grinding can be fun - that's how poker machines work!
