Planescape: Torment

Solid gameplay, marvelous story

I bought this game a few years ago as a two-in-one special, jewel cases only. Probably one of my best purchases. The gameplay is pretty good, though DnD fans might not like the loose adherence to the rules. The interface is much like that in Baldur's Gate, though decidedly more attractive and refined. Bugs are very few and far between. It is the story that really earns this game five stars, though. Right from the start, it immerses you in the Planescape universe (well, multi-verse). You have no memory, but this isn't just a rationale for having to ask your trusty floating skull companion about much of what you see: it is an integral part of your story. There is a fair amount of freedom in how you go about achieving your objective (figuring out who is trying and has been killing you, and why it doesn't stick), and it is even possible to avoid many major fights just by digging up the right information and having a sufficiently persuasive, wise, and/or intelligent character. While there are quite a few generic character models for average bashers on the street, your companions are very unique. For the most part NOT in line with the DnD players guides in terms of abilities and some are probably nothing you have read about in the fiction. You have interactions with them along the lines of what one sees in Knights of the Old Republic: talk to them, learn about them, learn from them. I would say that the one true deficiency of the game is that there are a few places/characters that do not feel quite finished (in one case, actually isn't finished). They aren't glaring items, but they are there. A caveat should be added: you probably will not think this game a five star if you are adverse to reading and following a story. Torment's great strength is the plot. If you can't get into it, you will still find a good game, just not excellent.

Gothic 2 Gold Edition

Great game with a slightly odd interface

What is there to say? The graphics are dated but still nice. The story is good even though it is not terribly original. It has a primarily keyboard interface that is a bit different, but is pretty effective once you get used to it (and great for people who end up playing from a laptop actually in their lap). The game isn't completely linear, allowing for some choices that impact gameplay. The enemies are not hit point blocks: the tactics you use will differ with the type of enemy and your choice of weapons. Though to be fair, there aren't too many variations. You may read in the original reviews for the game that it is buggy: that is definitely a past issue. I ran into only one serious bug and it is one that you are warned against in the readme file(No, I did not read it until after I hit the bug. Yes, I am just that smart :P ). If you like CRPGs along the lines of Arx Fatalis or Ultima Underworld you will like this one.
