Against the Storm

Brilliant and good value

I enjoyed this game a lot last year and since then it has been updated many times. Great atmosphere and mechanics and the developers have poured a lot of love into it. I found it relaxing and challenging at the same time. Scaleable difficulty allows you to find your sweet spot. The meta elements get me motivated to progress and attempt higher difficulty. Pleased to see the game on GOG! (I originally bought on another platform.)

SKALD: Against the Black Priory

From side quests to cosmic horror

At first I struggled to get into the game, but am pleased that I persevered because I had a great time with the characters, story, and world building. The music is excellent and the pixel-art is rich and varied. The ending was harrowing, refreshing to see, and unique. I wouldn't say unexpected because there were hints throughout the game. For the convenience of focussing on the story, I played on a custom setting to eliminate having to rest after every battle and to be more successful in skill checks. There are a lot of settings for tweaking your run to your taste. Reasonably priced. My first playthrough was nearly 30 hours. I took my time and tried to be thorough. Fantastic achievement for a small team. Be warned though, this game is not for the faint of heart! [Shivers]

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

Disco

Played the game twice before the final cut (with full voice acting and extra missions), which I mean to get round to experiencing. One of my favourite games for its unique story, atmosphere, humour, and characters. I love a bit of philosophy and socio-economic critique. The art is wild. The writing fine. Thank you creators.

The Gunk

Explore and restore...

...a beautiful alien world in this enjoyable casual adventure. The tone of the interactions between the protaganists was immature and testing at times. Enjoyed the experience overall and appreciated the soundtrack. If you hang out on the main menu and listen to the title them, you'll hear some fine cello playing!

Vampyr

Kudos for storytelling

I played Vampyr on PS4 at launch. I loved it for the music, world building, story telling and novel narrative mechanics. It had some stand out dramatic cinematics that wowed me. In my playthrough, I deliberately avoided feeding on people and did my best to heal the districts. I found the combat fine, despite the added challenge by choosing not to feed on civilians. One point I appreciated: If you choose to give in to vampiric hunger by feeding on ordinary folk, whilst the protagonist became stronger, it also makes the final boss stronger because it feeds on the chaos you leave in your wake. Refreshing! If you appreciate good dialogue and well crafted stories, I heartily recommend. Less so if you want more action.

Rogue Lords

Dastardly

A devilish strategy RPG that I've enjoyed and found challenging to beat, so far, on apprentice mode. The game is complete as is, though I wish there were more meta elements to make the game easier for those who find the complex skills and potential strategies too difficult. It feels underdeveloped in some respects - worldbuilding, world map, disciple interactions... Many more positives than negatives, for me. I found the game more time consuming than I would have liked; though a run depends somewhat on RNG for relics and the disciples you put together. All the characters are effective when you learn suitable skill synergies. Love the soundtrack and artwork. I'll be supporting the developer by purchasing their upcoming game Synergy.
