The Evil Within

Good game, terrible bosses

Hard to say if this game is good or not - the boss fights suck and every single boss leaves you with frustration and anger. It's not that hard, it just sucks. You die either instantly or after a few hits until you "get" the boss and then you move on. This destroys the atmosphere - there is no more horror if you have to do thos fights over and over again. All tension gone, what stays is boredom and lack of motivation. And there are many of them. THe typical gameplay loop is this: Play a chapter, great 30-40 minutes, you love the game. Then a boss fight, you hate the game. Then the chapter ends. The problem is: The end of any game, series, movie or, in this case, chapter decides on how you feel about the medium. And when you play this game and decide to quit for bedtime or dinner or whatever, you always quit with frustration and lose the motivation to continue playing. Without bosses, 4/5 stars. The bosses alone 1/5. So, this game is a subjective 2/5 and an objective 3/5. Continue playing, it stays good. But a game that has a hard time keeping you motivated is not a good game.

Solo

Meh... nothing special

It's okay when you could get it for free. You walk around solving some very easy puzzles while answering personal questions about love and relationships. In the end, maybe after 3 hours or so, you'll get a summary of your anwers which I think should feel like "the game tested you and now tells you about yourself", but it actually only repeats your answers in a few diferent words. All in all it's okay, but if it had lasted longer, I wouldn't even have finished it.

Sunless Sea

Surprisingly bad

After all the praise I did not expect that - this game is really, really bad. It is a story-based rogue-like and this already breaks it. (1) The game has an extremely difficult start, not because you die in battle or can't do some tricky moves but because your ressources burn out fast and are way to expensive for a new player. So, at first you'll get a Game Over for lack of ressources quite fast without really knowing what you are doing wrong. Also, the game plays very slow, so you'll die very fast "ingame" but it will still take some time "in reality" which is as boring as it is frustrating. (2) The main focus is the story, not the gameplay. Which is fine on itself, a great written story with a lot of well-written text can be a very good thing. But those thing get smashed when the game has a permadeth mechanic! To be fair, you can save manually and therefore this point of critique has been fixed. Still: you WILL die in the beginning, and you will do so a lot of times. And qhile the game "rendomizes" it's world, the islands, stories and missions are 90% identically, just with some RNG outcomes. Pairing story-based and rogue-like gameplay is a really, really bad idea and one of the two reasons this is a really, really bad game. - After some time - if you managed to keep playing - you'll get the game and stop losing so fast. The clever way would be to read Wikis or tutorials,. but those are always spoilers for the story, which again shows that rogue+story is a bad idea. Still, let's get to the gameplay. Nowm that you've understood the game you realize: "oh, actually this game is not really... er... fun?". It is very slow, it does not have a real sense of progression or success. It just... goes on... untill you die or finish it. And remember, dying during the story forces you to re-play the already known, and after so many attempts very well known, story. -- Okay, the good stuff. Atmosphere. Music. Graphics, maybe? Well, not really. But it fits. It's okay

Mafia Classic

Difficulty ruins it

Mafia is broken. In many ways. The game itself, awesome. Great story, weird voice acting but a nice cinematic feel. Gameplay feels good, the city has a great atmosphere. But the game is, unfortunately, an utterly gruesome mess to play. First, bugs. I've played the game back then and I can't recall this happening, but I had to rely on dowloaded savegames four times already because four times the missions were broklen. Steal a car, it doesn't spawn. Talk to a NPC, he is stuck in an animation and cannot be talked to. Stuff like this. Then, difficulty. There are games that should be punishing, because some players like a challenge. Then there are games that should not be, because the main theme is not the challenge but the cinematic gameplay. Mafia is a game that should be fair and fun to play. It is not. Play the first mission. Run away. Behind you, shots. The shots are kind of random because of the massive recoil - so, sometimes you die. In this kind of tutorial. Not by your fault, but by chance. Play any mission: Get shot two or three times, die. Repeat the last few minutes for you cannot save. Play any mission with other characters: They are not helping, they are trying to fail you. Your friends run blindly into fire and draw attention of several enemies at once, so that you can be sure to fail the mission a few times because your friends died. In short: Every time you have fun, you have to pay for it with frustration. Every memory of a good time gets overshadowed with a memory of rage. I love this game. I really do. But I hate to play it. It feels like it is made to punish you. To make you fail. Way more than to be fun. Watch reviews and playthroughts. Enjoy the atmosphere. But don't try to play it.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Walking -Sim with perspective puzzles

This game is awesome! The graphics rule, one of the most realistic faces and bodies I've seen in gaming yet. Wow! The game itself follows a mentally unstable woman and does this quite great. You get to feel and see what she experiences, nice work! However, the game itself is nothing more than a walking sim with several interesting, but easy perspective puzzles. No critic here, it plays very well, but don't expect an action game. Oh, and the fighting! I have to take one star away for the abomination that is combat in this game. I have not seen such a disastrously annoying, frustrating and broken combat system since RYSE. It is unbelievable how this rape of gameplay could have survived testing. My advise is to "mod" combat out of the game, for example by using a cheat (trainer) that gives you one-hit kills. So: Remove the fighting "sequences" (trying to avoid harsh language here) and experience a really extraordinary game. Just do it.

Batman - The Telltale Series

More a show than a game

First: Yes I know Telltale makes interactive movies more than games. Still, this one has many decisions but almost none of them matter any more than a few sentences that recall your choice. So, don't expect a game that envolves around your choices, but more a story with a few irrelevant dialogue options. Sounds bad? It shouldn't! It's a great story with a neat style and cool twists. Just don't expect a game. Oh, and: Performance sucks. The game freezes for a very short time when switching scenes, which might not sound big, but in a game that is edited like a movie, it really pulls you out of the mood.

DOOM 3

Great, but not best collection

Yes, there are major flaws with this edition. We get it, but that's no reason to give it one-star ratings. The games are awesome, no matter what. Doom 3 and its way superior addon are nice games till today, although the main game is quite repetitive and would have been better if it had a more compressed design. RoE fixes this and plays much better because of this sole reason. The new mini-addon and the original Doom games are a nice bonus but if you're a fan you've played the originals "uncut" and with a good source port. Still, nice to get the bonus campaign for Doom 2! All in all, not much has to be said about Doom 3. It could be better, it still is great. And meanwhile there are also mods for the BFG Edition, so this version is a nice-to-play variant without the classic HD and widescreen problems. Simply enjoy it.
