This game got me into modding and level design. Oh, the hours I spent making my own maps! The level design is the best of any FPS ever. Remember that it came out in '96 and had realistic city scenes when competing with the likes of Doom and, later that year, Quake, both of which I have done level editing for also. Now every 3d Game that depicts cities, owes a great deal to this game. If you want to get into level editing, this is a good place to start, especially due to the fact that the source code has been released.
This game is an homage to every horror movie ever made, and, in my humble opinion, one of the best FPS of all time. If you've never played it before, you might not think that it is anything special. Afterall the graphics aren't all that great. But it was so disturbing. The dark humor just made it all the darker. It's basically Duke Nukem 3d meets horror. I would have to say that Duke Nukem 3d was better just due to the fact it broke more ground. The level design in Duke Nukem 3d was so amazing. Some levels actually looked like Los Angeles. That was amazing considering that it was competing with the likes of Doom. I would have to say, that due to the limits of the engine, and the time that it came out, Duke Nukem 3d had the best level design of any FPS to date. However, THIS is my favorite Build engine game. The atmosphere is better than any other horror game ever. It is almost as though the fact that it was so primative made it MORE disturbing. No other game, not even it's sequel, come close. This is my favorite horror game. I know that that sounds silly, because the game is campy, like most of the campy movies it mocks, but the game is disturbing. If you like Duke Nukem you will like this. I got into horror because of this game. I like it more than Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but that is partially because I hate hard puzzles and because I like action.
