This game is great in its own right, but what matters to me most is that it is open-source for all your modding needs. If you don't like the game, you can change it. If you DO like the game, you can make it better. Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
As with Unreal Tournament, you may play against other humans, or A.I. bots. There have been many heated debates over Unreal Tournament verses Quake III: Arena. Let me settle the debate once and for all. This game is open-source and Unreal Tournament is not. As a modder, that is all it takes for me. Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Some people consider this to be the greatest game ever made. It is part first-person shooter, part rpg. This is the game that made Half-Life 2 a disappointment for me. Deus Ex is a cyberpunk conspiracy game: basically Shadowrun (as far as setting) meets The X-files. The maps are huge with multiple solutions from which to choose based on what kind of character you want to play. The rpg skills are Weapons: Heavy, Weapons: Pistol, Weapons: Rifle, Weapons: Low-Tech, Weapons: Demolition, Environmental Training, Lockpicking, Electronics, Medicine, Computer, and Swimming. (Though Swimming doesn't really help you.) This lends itself to much customization. Play it and discover why some people consider it the greatest game ever made. Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
The only reason this is not my favorite game of all time is that it is not open-source, but the OpenMW project is changing that. The game is a huge nonlinear, open-ended, sandbox rpg. It even has mod tools. If you like exploration and freedom, purchase it. Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Due to the fact that Beyond Good and Evil was described as an adventure game, I thought that it was a 3D point and click adventure. I don't like point and click adventure games, so I was pleasantly surprised that it is actually an adventure game like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! The story and setting are completely different, but it retains many of the same elements. It is a great game! Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
First of all, Clive Barker was brought in relatively late on the project, so while many of the aspects were of his design, much of it was completed before he got on board, so, due to this, the title is a bit misleading. However, this is a great game. Sure it contains the new age bologna that you can fight the occult with the occult, like just about every other game out there, but those looking for dark atmosphere mingled with horror will find it. Other than the graphics being a bit dated, this game can hold its own with most modern games. The environment design is wonderful and very Lovecraftian. If you like Lovecraft, you should like this. The game is a macabre walk into the bizarre, a roller coaster descent into madness, which doesn't disappoint. For the price, it is well worth your money. $5.99? That's nothing! The game is all about atmosphere, and traditional gothic horror. I cannot emphasize the Lovecraftian tone enough. The environments are simply beautiful. Gothic horror at its finest. Titus 3:5 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"
This is why indie games are more fun than the big budget ones. This is a great Metroidvania, filled with exploration. I must say that it excelled far beyond my expectations. If you like exploration games like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, buy this. You won't be disappointed. John 3:36 "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
I could write a lengthy review, but why would I do that when I can simply say this is the best pinball simulation I have ever played? John 3:36 "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
