Darklands

So.... awesome....

A cult classic. An excellent game. Forget these other old games, this one provides detail. It has storytelling. It makes it like a choose your own adventurer! The game combines folklore, medieval Christian culture and fantasy/high adventure all into one. Here are knights and trials, inns and beer, gnomes in mines, Saints (based on real life historical Saints) with backgrounds provided in game. This is the "magic" system! You pray to Saints and they intercede! And it is always unique because so much of the game is through dialogues and hand drawn pictures. Amazing. Love this game; but it now.

The Temple of Elemental Evil

Very Short, Combat Romp with No Plot

TOEE was an attempt to implement an old D&D module, by the same name, bearing a fairly strict adherence to that module. Unfortunately, it doesn't translate. There is little or no plot structure because you can only find out certain sections of the plot if you are particular races or classes or go particular places, which you won't necessarily go. In fact, you can pretty much just go to the big bad boss, beat him surprisingly easily, and call it a day. This is a short, combat-oriented game. The combat system, while an interesting adherence to 3rd Edition D&D rules, does not stand alone without a story. There is also a crafting system, per D&D rules, which is rather painful as well (experience penalties for crafting objects; standardized objects to be craft "... of might +2 or +4" etc.
