Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition

Another Must-Own

I admit I bit on the sale price, and the game is well worth it, albeit a tad frustrating. You'll certainly notice improvements to games like Doom and Quake II from that period, in terms of what the devs did with that engine. This Duke game went on to heavily influence the Serious Sam franchise and of course was the running sequel joke until the sequel finally came out, and bombed. Duke 1&2 are also a big part of PC gaming history, but aren't nearly as sexist or 80's-action hero'ish (and were platform/side-scrolling shooters) as Duke Nukem 3D. You MUST set-up the controls and mouse to play this game comfortably, just look for the settings .exe file in the game's folder from the start menu, as it uses DOS box (but don't let that scare you, you don't have to enter a single command). Once you easily swap in those WASD controls, E for "open" and Space bar for "jump," enable mouse aim with the "U" key and the cross hair with the "I" key, you're ready to fry some aliens and bag some chicks.

Anachronox

Behold!

This game is on GoG for a reason. I still have the original CD and box, and I hate searching for patches, so GoG comes through again. Anachronox was absolutely one of the most memorable games I've ever played, granted it was closer to the time of its release when I did. The game was full of delays but had total commitment from its developers and designers. It's a cult popularity game, for old school PC gaming types, and the last big hurrah from the (heavily modified) Quake II engine. I enjoyed the combat and adventure puzzles, it was a nice mix/twist of gaming with a great story that kept you focused on it until you finished it. If you haven't played it, but are a regular here at GoG, you really need to get it.

Myst Masterpiece Edition

Space Invaders - Pac Man - Zelda - Myst

My Mac Performa 630CD in late 1994 with 4 MB of RAM and a 33mhz processor, and 250MB of hard drive space, played this game into the wee hours of the morning. I still have my official Myst Journal that came with the game, with hand-written diagrams and notes, from '94. Myst wasn't even so much about gaming, it was a revolutionary way of interacting with a computer, a mouse-driven GUI in a high resolution environment. Nothing else did this back then. It was amazing then, but obviously silly to think about now. The atmospheric sound, animations, art, and story still hold-up today, people should really respect Myst, even if they wouldn't enjoy it now.
