Gods Will Fall

Original concept, but divisive.

Loved the concept in this game. A group of warriors travel to a far away land in order to destroy the gods that have plagued them. So once you approach each dungeon that contains a god, you get to chose which party member ventures forth to fight it out. Of course, if that member doesn't make it back, you'll have to send another to take their place. Then another, and another, and another. Which is where this game falls flat. The hack n slash combat doesn't provide enough variety to hold the repetitive nature of a rougelike, such as this game, at bay. Needless to say, there is a lot of rinse and repeat as you go from one dungeon to the next, with little variety in regular enemy types. Repetitiveness can be a good thing if you have solid game-play to back it up. Unfortunately, Gods Will Fall only just scrapes into the 'fine' category. I'd say if the concept sounds good, do give it a go on deep sale.

PLANET ALPHA

Great addition to the genre!

Yet another 2D adventure platformer that throws it's hat in the ring with the likes of Out of this World, Limbo, Inside and etc etc. But it sure does stand on it's own. The setting and game-play driven narrative really sets the stage for an epic adventure. You play as what seems to be an off world explorer who has landed on a strange planet. This planet sure is full of life, wonder and originality, making it easy to soak in the atmosphere. But the sight seeing is quickly cut short when an army of alien robots land and start tearing up the planet! The over premise creates a fantastic back drop for the over all game-play and art design. At first it might seem like a fairly straight forward puzzle platformer. But then quickly turns into a high octane adventure and fight for survival as you move from one intense level to the next. And each area of the game will greet you with a ton of vibrant level design, creatures and enemies that will constantly keep you on your toes. This game sure doesn't re-invent the wheel when it comes to the 2D adventure genre. But it does do it very well and stands right out amongst some of greats. If you love this type of game, it really is a must play.

Speed Limit

Short but fun

If you're a fan of any 2D shoot em up such as Metal Slug and the like, this should wet your whistle fine. I love the premise that you're just some random dude on a train who has been handed a gun then the whole world has mistaken you for some secret agent or something. Good visuals, music is fine and the game-play is fun enough. Each level changes things up enough to get the ball rolling. Good for a cheap price.

My Friend Pedro

Silly But Solid

What you got here is a 2D twin stick shooter that favours style over substance. The premise is simple. You play as some dude who can see a talking banana (Pedro) who encourages him to go on a gangsters killing spree. That's it! On top of that, the visuals aren't much to look at either, leaving you with the game-play. And for any platform shooter fan, this will really scratch the itch. Instead of blasting your way from level to level, the game encourages you to dive, jump and flip while utilising the slow down mechanic. Overall, the fun is in having to pull of these stylish, badarse manoeuvres along with using the environment and array of weapons to your advantage. I did have fun, it is just different enough to keep me engaged. However, I had to endure multiple crashes again and again. Real shame, because I would have loved to squeeze more out of this. Worth the price if you like your twin stick shooters.

SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell

Silly but solid

SEUM takes everything that sucks about 3D platforming and turns it on it's head. Not a massive amount of depth, just speed running through level after level. But those levels are designed well and makes the most out of the power up mechanics you receive along the way. That, plus the music and comedic tone makes for an addictive ride. Nice little time waster here, especially if you like the game-play as I'm sure it'll keep you hooked. Well worth the price if you like fast paced platforming.

Panzer Dragoon: Remake

Sega's answer to Starfox.

There isn't much of a story here, other than you play a man in an obscure fantasy world who rides a dragon. He's sole motivation, to seek out and destroy another man and his dragon. Not much else. The cut-scenes sure show their age, even with the improved graphics. However, the in-game visuals make for a much smoother and vibrant experience than the original. For the game-play, it is a rail shooter, so that's pretty much it. Lock onto enemy and shoot shoot shoot. However, what set this one apart from others at the time was the ability to target the 360 degree environment. Meaning you always have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Very much a product of its time, there isn't much here unless you were a massive fan of the original. If you are a fan though, it's a nice revisit due to the re-vamped graphics. Regardless, $35.95AUD at the time of writing is too much for such a short game. If you're keen, get it on sale.

World Championship Boxing Manager™

One of a kind

Yet another old game I wish I had played on release. Being a massive boxing fan, I have no doubt I would have been drawn in straight away. But of course, it is very much a product of it's time. The gameplay mixed with the date UI makes for a slow experience. Even so, there is some good attention to detail in regards to how you play as a manager. I'm sure there would be a great number of people who would love to see these management mechanics implemented into a game like Fight Night. Let's hope that games like these inspire idea's to improve boxing in the future.

Wetlands

For the FMV junkies

This is another one of those games that I wish I played back in the day. I'm sure my little 11 year old mind would have loved the FMV sci-fi story that Wetlands has delivered. The overall experience is in the same vein as other rail shooters such as Rebel Assault or Cyberia. But like most games of it's time, it's a bit rough to look at and to play. The controls alone are extremely dated, especially for something as simple as a rail shooter. All that said, this is worth the price if it has sparked your interest or even a little curious

Summer & Winter: Olympic Challenge

Would have been great in 1996!

I wish I had known about this one when I was younger. Good amount of events here and it's great that the joystick supports works so well with a controller. Is fun and would have been great for 1996, and the fact it works so well makes it worth the price. That being said, with all the Olympic games out there, this one is just another one to add to the pile.
