You can pretty much just skip Crusader Kings 2 and get every bit as satisfying an experience at about 99.5% less than the price of the complete CK2 collection. No bottomless money pit of questionable DLC without end, just a complete awesome game.

It's basically a survival game only instead of trying to survive as a character you're trying to survive as a medieval town of exiles, carefully managing resources & infrastructure. I have it on Steam but you can download most mods without Workshop.
Best played for it's wonderful well written and enthralling campaign, full of adventure, kinship, & betrayal. Anyone interested in the lore of Age of Wonders should pick this up. Shadow Magic has all the rest and more, but this campaign is excellent.

The Sequel to Age of Wonders 2, Shadow Magic has it's own campaign focused on four separate characters. Shadow Magic also has a Random Map Generator, Excellent mod support with a still active community, and adds the Shadow Realm and Additional races.

A Remastering of Baldur's Gate 2 for modern systems, updated with a host of new content. Definitely worth exploring, the game comes complete with Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal as well a new separate campaign, and adds new characters as well.

Even though the cut scenes are laughably funny at times, this is a unique RTS that uses a Unit Alchemy System to create a variety of units, has a variety of heroes which can be upgraded, an intriguing main campaign & holds up well on modern systems.
