The first time I tried this I couldn't get into it, mainly the combat felt turn based. I decided to give it another try, and I'm glad I did. Story is fantastic, music is fantastic, voice acting is fantastic, and as you advance the combat becomes enjoyable, even tense at times! This game is slow burn you need to give it a few hours to get going, but once it does it's a great ride. Tons of content for the money, and multiple endings for replay value. If your on the fence, give it a try.
I remember watching this game game get hammered on release, so I had no intention of buying it. But I kept watching Hello Games add updates, so I thought why not give it a try. So after having zero experience on launch, I can tell you this game is a good time as of the Atlas update. Currently playing in a few modes, creative, and doing the atlas story on normal. Seems there is plenty to do, and see. Nice colorful worlds, cool star ships, base building, sci fi sounding music, etc. There is some repetition, it's grindy in the sence your always collecting resources, and repairing. I see alot of complaints on optimization. I'm not seeing a problem there, I'm using the R9-390X, and I'm running the game at 1080p solid 60 fps. I respect Hello Games for trying to make good on the promises made. Most game companies would have simply taken the money and ran. If the price is right give it a try.
As a die hard Doom fan from day one I feel qualified to throw my two cents in here. First of all DOOM 3 (either version) is a different take on the franchise. They are slower, feature cutscenes, etc. This isn’t the old school fast paced “run n gun” your used to. Is that a bad thing? In my opinion no. Lets look at the differences between BFG, and Vanilla DOOM 3. DOOM 3 BFG (GOG Version) *Upgraded graphics engine ID Tech 5. (without using mods, this is the better looking game) *Native Xbox 360 controller support *Includes the expansions. Resurrection of Evil. *Includes The lost Mission (exclusive to this version) *Includes DOOM, and DOOM 2. (Both with native Xbox 360 pad Support) *3D TV Support. I haven’t tested this, but its there and I’d like to try it! *The flashlight is fixed to your shoulder, and you can use it while shooting. *There seems to be more ammo available DOOM 3 & Resurrection of Evil (CD Version) *Mod support (http://www.moddb.com/games/doom-iii/mods) *Co-Op Mode (with Mods) *Better Graphics (with Mods) *Flashlight Mechanic. You can either shoot, or see. (I admit I enjoyed this) *Less Ammo (there’s enough, you have what you need, but sometimes its tense) Verdict: DOOM 3 BFG is still DOOM 3. Don’t listen to the haters. If you can score this title for $4.99 on a GOG sale do it! I also recommend grabbing the CD version on Amazon as well, the mods are fantastic. To me this title (either version) has tons of replay value, and it was a game changing title inspiring such games as Dead Space. Worth every penny in my opinion.
