Dying Light: Definitive Edition

Wonderful wonderful experience!

So, I bough this game because it went on sale. I normally hate open world games that don't at least give you the option of switching back and forth between first and third person. This game sticks you in first the whole time. I grabbed it because I like zombie games... and open world games... and it was cheap. I wasn't expecting to get sucked in like I did. Many late nights literally getting the crap scared out of me as zombies attacked or swarmed. It was literally mid-game before I had the confidence to take my character outside during the nighttime where the more difficult zombies roamed. This game incited fear in me, and that made it all the more realistic. This game has everything you want in an open world survival horror: Great storytelling, crafting, wonderful voice acting, beautifully dismal graphics depicting a collapsed city... AND ZIP-LINES! So much to do and so much to take in. I was shocked by the quality of everything. Oh, and me being stuck in first person? It turned out to not be so bad. It pushed the realism. I couldn't see behind me, I couldn't see around me... If i heard a noise I had to turn to check it out. It was great. The amount of abilities to learn, the amount of items to craft, the amount of characters to interact with, the sheer number of zombies... The STORY!!! I couldn't put it down. Seriously a great experience. (Also, exploding arrows into hordes of zombies... it was beautiful.) It's worth it if you see this game on sale. Seriously. By end-game you're pretty overpowered, but you had to work your butt off for it! So enjoy the powerlessness and go pwn those zombies! (Look up pwn... It's a thing. An older thing. It means dominate.) You get the picture. Go play and enjoy.

Glad I finally played it!

So, I bought this game on sale a while back and it was sitting in my backlog. Then I checked howlongtobeat.com and found it only takes about 4 hours to beat and decided to knock it out. So glad I did! This game is my type of game. That being said, this type of game isn't for everybody. Check the GAME DESCRIPTION before buying any game... If the game doesn't live up to it, dock it stars and complain. This game, however, lives up to it's description... And wonderfully. So, I give it a full 5. This game is essentially a walking simulator with some horror elements and very minimal puzzle solving, along with a few run for your life segments. If you go in expecting that sort of thing then you won't be disappointed. It's not a survival horror game, and it's not an FPS. Go in expecting a beautifully dark environment where science has pushed it's limits too far, and people are now having to live with the consequences. Who can you trust? Who are your friends? And what happened to your sister? Why are there bodies strewn all over the ship in various forms of slaughter? (This game is not for the weak of stomach, there are some truly gruesome places on this ship.) I really enjoyed this game. If you go into it with the right mindset then I know you will to. Don't expect what it's not.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Absolutely beautiful and moving

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said before... So I'm just gonna say all the good stuff again! This game was a wonderful little romp through a fantasy world. Moving each character with a different joystick was a little difficult to adjust to, but after a while it felt like second nature. I love unique game mechanics when they work well! The graphics are gorgeous. The world-building is spot on. The different areas and scenes were refreshing. Characters met along the way were well thought out and portrayed with care. The story... Gosh the story is beautiful. I won't spoil anything, but the story is a mix of tragedy and coming of age. It has a few twists that I didn't expect, and the ending nearly brought tears to my eyes. If you want a moving story and want to experience some fun unique game mechanics, then I highly recommend this game.

LOST EMBER

A lil buggy, but beautiful!

Ok, you don't want to play this game for it's story... Honestly it was a bit predictable. However, the graphic quality of the world built, and the fact you get to roam these beautiful landscapes as a variety of animals, is why you want this game! It's astonishingly beautiful. The game can be finished in 4 hours, supposedly. However, I took so much time wandering around and exploring that it took me closer to 8. There's enough to explore that you won't get easily bored. If you bum-rush this game to get the story, you'll probably be disappointed. As I said, the story isn't that glamorous. So, if you're wanting to kill a few hours and immerse yourself in beautiful surroundings and wonderful relaxing music, then this could be worth your money. There are are couple of times that bugs caused me to have to restart at the last checkpoint... That was annoying. It wasn't super clear how I was to proceed all the time, and then to get lost and trapped in a buggy area and have to restart can be frustrating. (You don't lose any collectables you find, but have to retrace your steps on the main path) I was still able to get so much enjoyment out of the game despite these few hangups. If a bug-free experience is what you're looking for then maybe avoid this one. If you can look past the bugs like I did then you'll really enjoy this experience. And that's what this game is, ultimately: an experience. There's no enemies, no health-bar. Just you, the animals, and the surroundings. The surroundings are beautifully engaging and detailed. It's what you want the game for. If you find that appealing then grab it when it's on sale and enjoy!

Mainframe Defenders

So much game for so little cost!

Ok, this game is simple enough in it's concept: Turn based combat with robots. However, it's the aesthetics and the smoothness of the mechanics that make this game a GEM!!! First off, the retro look is awesome, and they throw in things like color customization and re-naming the robots you're using. (Little things like that give me so much joy!) So, it's retro, but it's a more modern retro experience! Not to mention the soundtrack ROCKS! I hope they offer it for purchasing at a later date... because I'll buy it if they do. For gameplay I couldn't be more pleased: Turn based mechanics, Action Points (which can be upgraded by issuing certain items to the robots), simple controls. The developers did not set out to reinvent the wheel, but they sure made that wheel look a whole heck of a lot better, and run a lot smoother! If you like sci-fi and turn-based strategy combat games then give this game a shot! Plus, it's only $6 dollars new! (And I got it for eighty nine cents for sale!) You can't get better than this for your money. It's a solid gaming experience for so little cost. Plus there's unlockable robots and items the more you play. A single run can provide you with so much entertainment, and then you earn enough to unlock stuff for your next run and make it even better. So, yes, this is essentially a rogue-lite game. But it is done with such clarity. This game knows exactly what it is, and what it wants to do... And it nails it. Don't play this game if you don't like retro-style graphics. The pictures on the game page are 100% accurate of the gaming experience. Also, they add little filters in the settings to fine-tune exactly the kind of retro you want! (S Video, VHS, Noisless, etc) And also filters for Bloom lighting and such. I had a blast just roaming the settings and preparing for my first run! If you're on the fence, get off the fence and try this game out! The description page is accurate, so I give this game 5 Stars. It deserves it.

Chromosome Evil

Difficult, but Creepy and Fun

So, I wanted to wait till there were more reviews before getting this... because it looked like a fairly niche type game. It also looked difficult, and I wasn't sure I wanted to get a game that would frustrate me. However, something caught my eye that pushed me to make the purchase: the developers created their own cheat trainer as a FREE DLC! Think about that for as second... There are some games that, when it gets too tough and frustrating you quit and feel like you didn't get your money's worth. Maybe this could have been one of those games for me, but I saw the free cheat trainer and flipped! I wish more developers would do this for their games! I've seen many third party scams where they make cheat trainers for games and they ruin computers. You never know what is safe and what isn't. Well, these lovely developers took that into consideration and created a completely safe cheat trainer for their own game, and I want to support these guys SO MUCH for that! Also, they have another free DLC which offers you more weapons, armor, and such. Also, I feel the need to mention that the game is not all about zombies. It is definitely tied into Lovecraft's mythos... so please ignore the first review. They obviously didn't read the full game description. Also they're not a verified owner. They just decided to write a spam review based on a glance at the page rather than play and leave a decent review. The gameplay is tough: loot abandoned houses and such to get supplies or rescue new crew members. Fight off zombies and Lovecraftian minions. You're limited on time before swarms you can't handle come so you have to think fast. Opening doors takes time, so choose wisely where you take your crew. My only complaint is that if you set two people to the same task it doesn't happen faster. I would think two people taking on the same door would open if faster, but it doesn't work that way. Set each person to a task and you're good. Show support for devs that love gamers!

It just kept getting better and better

I had this game on my wish-list for a while before finally purchasing it. I was expecting what I saw in the previews: A challenging platformer that transcended time. Let me just say that I was completely blown away by this game and it is so much more than just a challenging platformer. This game, first off, is a wonderful homage to the old Ninja Gaiden game. It's look, the music, the tight controls all work perfectly together. The skill and abilities gained throughout the game are so satisfying and by the end you feel practically invincible! (Running over lava, climbing walls, etc...) Not gonna lie, it can be difficult at times, but if you enjoy platforming then this game is worth your time. Not to mention that the game eventually opens up from a mere platformer to an epic metroid-vania! It blew my mind that they managed to combine all the elements so perfectly. Also, the humor. This game is full of lil one liners and conversations that just make you smile (if not laugh out loud.) This gem full of twists and turns is also full of joy and laughter, but also emotional enough at the right moments to make you sit back and breath a fulfilled sigh. The phrase "they don't make games like they used too" doesn't apply here. The developers did such a good job with this game! Seriously can't say enough nice things about it! (Plus you can buy the sound-tracks! The music is fantastic by the way!) My children also loved playing through this game. It's completely family friendly as well, which is a huge plus for me. I love talking to my kids about different points in the game and what their thoughts were. It's rare to find a game that the whole family can enjoy nowadays. All in all, thanks to the developers and everyone that made this beautiful gem of a game! And you other people... Buy it! Support these guys! They earned it.

The Beast Inside

"Use your trusted revolver..." ...once.

So, I absolutely loved this game from start to finish. However, I rate games based on their faithfulness to the game page description... And this one said I could use my trusted revolver to shoot my way out from even the most lethal of scenarios... And there was only one chapter, out of 13, that called for me to carry a revolver. The rest of the game was run or die, and no revolver in sight. So, when a game doesn't live up to it's description I start docking stars. But, that issue aside, the game is freaking wonderful! I personally thought the pace of some of the scarier chapters was a little too intense for me, but I pushed through and I'm glad I did. This game pushed and pulled me around mentally in so many ways, and threw a good amount of jump scares at me to where I forced myself to take a few days off after the intense chapters. The graphics and music and voice acting are all superb. The length of the game as a whole was perfect. Any longer and I would have lost interest, and any shorter and I would have complained about the cost. Thankfully I had grabbed it on sale, so I feel it was money well spent. There is a heavy focus on story telling and a little bit of puzzle solving. Nothing too difficult. It's the running portions that were the most stressful to me, and even then they weren't scenes that I had to replay so many times that I got frustrated. They were manageable. This is not a first person shooter, though one chapter contains that element. This is a great, dark, intense story. If that sounds appealing then you won't regret adding this game to your library.
