Blackwell Epiphany

A Beautiful Conclusion

This game is great if you haven't played the rest of the series, but I still recommend that you do - and it's available in a bundle here on GOG! All of the Blackwell games represent classic entries in the genre, but this finale is a cut-above and gives this series the substantial end-cap it deserves. Not just the last in a string of 5 games, it's also the best in just about every way. If you like adventure games, avoid spoilers and play this series!

Great Adventure Game

After playing a couple of Wadget Eye's post-apocalyptic adventure games (Primordia and Shardlight), this was an interesting change of pace. There's still a dystopia for sure - but this one is gleaming with technology and insidious polish - not to mention a flourishing human society complete with cheeky AI. I've always enjoyed this studio's characters, but this game probably features my favorites if only because they bucked my expectations or managed to surprise me more than a couple times. If you like classic point-and-click adventures and a good detective story, this isn't one to miss. Nothing too crazy, but some scenes or themes might be disturbing to young or sensitive players.

Shardlight

Solid adventure goodness

This is a classic point and click, with all that tends to entail: that means retro pixel graphics, an interesting if slow story, and puzzles that well either leave you saying "okay I thought of that... just not like... THAT" or "okay I NEVER would have thought of that". If you don't mind either long sessions of head-scratching or short sessions with a walk-through, the art, story, and music here are totally worth it. I don't think I liked this as much as Primordia, Technobabylon, or the Blackwell games - but it's still one of my favorite in the genre and one that I'm very glad I played.

Adventure Gold

It's really hard to pick a favorite Wadget Eye game... but this might be mine. Wonderful pixel art, an engaging story, and fantastic voice acting make this a modern adventure classic. A post-apocalyptic setting and questions of consciousness abound... if Rustpunk isn't a word, it should be, and it totally describes the aesthetic of this game. (Think Cyberpunk, but after all the humans are long-dead and all the shiny streets and neon lights have given way to corrosion and dust.) I played this back in 2014, and it was my introduction to Wadget Eye as a studio - since then I've become a huge fan and have played the majority of their library. As I see it, Dave Gilbert as his little team are the modern torch-bearers of the genre, and this is some of their best work alongside Shardlight and the Blackwell games.

Like classic point-and-clicks?

The Blackwell series (and all of WadgetEye's games for that matter) fit the bill, and all that entails. Lovely pixel art, mostly simple but sometimes obtuse puzzles, and hot-spot hunting are vehicles to deliver an engaging paranormal mystery experience. I played the whole series late last year, and loved each game more than the last. The great voice-actors stay the same throughout the series, but each entry features a different character artist, giving the feeling of distinct chapters in the characters' lives. If you're into the classic point-and-click format, I can't recommend WadgetEye games enough - and their Blackwell series is one of my favorites.
