Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Enjoyable but forgettable

This is in fact a good game, but it falls short of what it could have been. The setting is rather intriguing, but the main plot never really takes off. The characters are lovable, but don't really get any development or back story. You interact with the world like in an RPG but there's no player's choice. By far the most fun part is the combat. The varied scenarios and situations keep it interesting - despite the fact that the game changing skills are unlocked too early. Just make sure to choose the hardest difficulty. All in all, this game lacks the depth of an RPG and the thrill of tactical masterpieces like XCOM. Still, it's perfect if you just want to spend a few evenings with a nice game without too much weight.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

How DLCs should be done

This is one of the best DLCs I have ever experienced. It adds so much to the base game, that experienced players should definitely do a re-run. On the other hand, it is so good that first time players should start the game with WotC already acticated. War of the Chosen makes XCOM2 really stand out and much more compelling than XCOM1. This was one of my best gaming experiences of the last years and is definitely up there with the original UFO: Enemy Unknown in 1994 among my all-time favourites.

Lords of Xulima - Deluxe Edition

Just bland...

In theory, I should love this game. I loved every one of the old games it takes inspiration from. In practice, it is just utterly bland. The story throws name after name around, Lord Suchandsuch, Sea of Thisandthat, without any background or emotional thread. Apparently, you're the Chosen One TM to end a conflict that's not really explained and doesn't mean anything to you. The side quests are borderline insulting - "Harvest my grain while I stand next to you." There is zero party interaction and no background to any of your characters. The interface makes you feel like 1992 in a bad way. For example, you can't just click on a herb to walk over and harvest it. You have to walk up to it. And then click on it. What I really don't get, is how they managed to make turn-based combat so utterly boring. This is the fantastic combat system of Darkest Dungeon, minus meaningful skills or traits or strengths and weaknesses or anything. Just clobbering the enemies to death and throwing in a heal or two. While this game clearly is a labor of love (hence the two star rating), there's no reason to play this game when we all have a huge pile of shame full of excellent games we haven't found the time for.
