Frantic shooter that shows its age

I can imagine that this game was great for its time - it's still funny and enjoyable now, but game design has moved on, and with deeper titles available for purchase now, it's uncertain as to whether there's really a place for a shallow FPS like this. Even when it's installed in Software Mode on my PC, it still suffers graphical glitches, which is dissapointing, and there are moments where I feel completely stuck and have no idea what to do next, and the game does nothing to help me. By all means, if you're nostalgic for this, pay it another visit, but if you've never played it before, save your cash.

Sacrifice

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No, it's Sacrifice! I strongly feel that this game tries to do too many things, and pulls each one off quite well, but not as well as they could have been. I find the HUD to be a bit awkward to use, the combat to be a bit tame, and the movement speed of the protagonist to be too slow. All in all, it's fun, but in short bursts.

Fallout Classic

What can I say?

This is Fallout. This is "the" RPG to own. It has withstood the test of time, and is still an excellent game to play, with a lot of different choices to make, hence a lot of replay value. The Fallout universe is so unique and nothing has come close to the Fallout series in terms of atmosphere and losing onesself in a game world. The Fallout series' intro FMVs are still awesome, too. I would reccomend purchasing it, but I expect most people on GOG already have.

Darkstar One

An epic, must-buy space adventure.

I haven't had this much fun in a long time, and it caused me immense pain to drag myself away from Darkstar One to even write this review. This game is incredible - the game universe is huge and beautiful, and the gameplay is superbly non-linear and varied. Want to be a pirate or a smuggler? Go ahead! The story and free play intertwine seamlessly, and the space combat is terrific as well. I can't reccommend this game highly, and for under $10, there is no excuse for not owning this game.

Unreal Tournament 2004 Editor's Choice Edition

Pretty, fun, hyperactive shooter

Even today, Unreal Tournament looks gorgeous on full graphics settings, despite the 5 years since its original release. Not only is it still a strong competitor with modern titles in terms of graphics, its gameplay still holds up nicely too. It is the very definition of twitch shooter, and to play it with anything other than a precise laser mouse is a sin. The weapons are well balanced and fun, the maps are colourful and varied (the highlight being the low gravity skyscraper rooftops map), and there are a good number of gameplay modes. However, on the negative side, the single player mode is a tad monotonous, and for a game that's meant to be played against real people, the online community isn't quite what it once was, which is what tends to happen five years after a game's initial release, but online matches are still smooth and fun as ever, when you can find other players.
