After having played Mafia 1 the definitive edition I tried this second one. Thus far it's been a very pleasant experience. It plays like a big interactive movie. The style is on point. Everything feels like the time frame it is in. The driving also feels quite realistic as well. Definately recommended
So right off the bat I must stress that this game has no key rebindings. I found the default buttons for my controller to be not optimised but could not change this. That said, let's get to the meat of the game. You're playing as the female protagonist Alyssa who works for a space agency and get sent to a mission to retrieve something on a remote planet and the fun starts from there. The story is 'okay', nothing to write home about. The dialogue feels very indie and reminds me of the time I tried making my own RPG. You get a lot of party members along the journey which can be swapped in and out depending on your liking. None of them are that interesting in terms of background story, but the real meat of the game is the combat. People have compared the game to Chrono Trigger in terms of combat. While you do start fights like in chrono trigger the combat is quite different in comparison. Yes It's tactical and turn based, but each ability expires for the remainder of the combat unless you defend a turn. This forces you to be extra strategic. I played and beat it on hard which meant that each fight felt very tough and in the early stages of the game I could JUST scrape by. About halfway through the game you do start to get that edge and the fights become less challenging. Fortunately you can switch the difficulty at any time. There are many abilities, weapons and armour to choose from. Each with extra combat abilities and perks. The graphics are a throwback to the old days and look decent. I do wish there was a bit more animation in the cut scenes though. The score for this game is quite good, but unfortunately some tracks could've done with more exposure in the game. Still, the soundtrack delivers and sets the right mood. In short, the game was quite enjoyable, had excellent combat but the writing and the story could've been better. If you like turn based JRPG games with interesting combat mechanics, this is a good enjoyable experience.
Hat in Time/a Hat in Time is a great platformer that throws you back to the 3D platformers of the early 2000s. The story is simple yet fun and keeps you hooked. It never fails to deliver a smile on your face. It has humor and cuteness this is enhanced by the graphics which makes it very colourful. The soundtrack is also amazing. It uses the theremin in many of the tracks to simulate the UFO/Space theme that is going on. The game is very approachable in terms of difficulty. You have a couple of hearts that every time you are hit will knock one off. However you can easily regain them. If you do manage to get knocked out you automatically start back to or very close to where you died. Luckily the controls are responsive and you have full control of the camera which is a -must have- for these kind of games which results in never feeling that it's: 'the game's fault' if you miss a jump or get knocked out. The game is kid friendly almost throughout the game except for one section which is the spooky town, and there especially the haunted mansion which could be nightmare inducing. With about 25 hours to complete 100% I felt it was a satisfying experience. The only reason it felt short to me is because I wanted so much more content!
Crashlands piqued my interest about two months ago when I saw the game being streamed. The game looked quite entertaining. Being sick, I decided I could use some laid back game. I spent the first couple of hours enjoying myself immensely. After two months, (100 hours on Galaxy and 42 in-game hours), I completed the long journey that is Crashlands. The game sets itself apart by focussing on the story instead survivaling. Story: 8/10 You are travelling through space to deliver the packages with your trusty robot friend called Juicebox. However your spaceship get's destroyed by a floating head, losing the packages in the process. You crash land on a strange planet and using the planet's resources you invent new armor and gear to help you along the way. Progressing is quite entertaining as the game is full of good humor. Gameplay 7/10 The gameplay consists of your mouse and a couple of hotkeys. You craft gear and kill monsters. It's quite enjoyable but unfortunately it gets stale after a while. The same formula for progression drags on for quite a while without changing. If it wasn't for the entertaining story, I might have stopped halfway, which is a shame. Still you have unlimited inventory space, Lots of decorative items and Fast travelling to almost anywhere in the world at any time. Add pets and fishing and it's a rich experience. Music: 7/10 It's alright to listen to. The building music (elevator music) is the best track in my opinion. The rest is alright. It's neither bad nor great. Graphics: 8/10 The game looks fine. It resembles don't starve for some reason but it works for what it tries to do. There are multiple worlds with each one looking completely different. Replayability: 6/10 There is quite a lot of perks to achieve and different difficulties. However I felt once was enough for me. Final verdict: 8/10 Crashlands is a great indie game that has a lot going for it, however it might feel a bit repetitive after a while.
Welcome to a fun stealth game with some interesting gameplay aspects but lack of story. Without further delay: Llet's dissect the game. Graphics: 3/5 The graphics are pretty and do their job, but not the best out there. I do wish we would get animated cut scenes, but the artwork is great! Story: 2/5 This does not mean the story is bad, it just means that there is basically no story at all. If you listen to the guards you'll hear a bit of background story as a bonus. Basically you're a killer who wants to kill the king. However you bump into a little girl that decides to follow you wherever you go. You have a choice of wether to kill the guards or not. The story changes slightly if you do kill the guards and lily notices. In between levels there are a few lines of dialogue. If lily gets horrified, there is barely any dialogue at all in between levels and the differences in endings are hardly significant. Gameplay: 4/5 Now here is where the game shines. You have a knife and a grappling hook. You can attach to wood and lift yourself upwards with the hook. You can pull carts, crates, barrels, etc to create noise and distract the guards along the way. It's often quite tricky. Luckily the time freezes if you stand still and you can instantly rewind time as far back as you like. This helps tremendously. I deduct one point from the gameplay due the somewhat glitchy nature of it all. Trust me you will find a couple. Which more often is hilarious nonetheless. Sound: 4/5 The sound is fine as it is. The SFX work very well and naturally it's in stereo so you can hear if a guard is to the left, right or in the back of you. The music does it's job. Nothing to write home about though. It varies through the level and won't annoy you. Replay value: 5/5 I replayed the game after a no kill run and I rarely ever replay a game, if ever. So it definately has great replay value Total Score: 4/5 - A game that entertained me a lot, but could've been so much more!
Gurumin is an adventure game with platforming elements in which you'll play as a little girl fighting with a drill. Sounds like fun? Well yes, it certainly has things going for it. Still there are quite a few things that make this game not so great which I'll list below: Graphics: Well it's a bit dated. The graphics look like the game is from the N64 era. (it is a port of the psp). I can live with that. However it seems to be locked down to 30 FPS which isn't that nice to experience. Gameplay: It's a lot of fun. You have nice combo's you can do, elemental attacks and so forth. Each level has (hidden) chests and jars for you to find. You get rewarded accordingly for how good you clear a level. It has enough enemy variety to keep you going too. However... - the camera is going to be constantly in your way obscuring the view in the most annoying ways possible. You will misjudge your jumps and timing and get hurt in the process guaranteed. You can adjust the camera yourself, but that sometimes can make it worse. So you are constantly fighting enemies and the camera. Story: The story is... alright. Nothing great to be found here. It seems very generic and targeted to a younger audience. Still it has some funny dialogue moments when you least expect it. It just has enough to keep you going further. Though personally it's more for playing the levels than the story. Music & Sound: SFX are quirky and fun and well placed. The music is alright too. In some places great! In others, just alright. The voice acting is... not so great. You will get used to it, but it's not nice to listen to. So what do we find? A fun game which most platformer/adventure gamer can enjoy. It's certainly not a great game. Far from it. Together with the issues I mentioned above, I give it a 3/5 or 6/10. The game length clocks in to around 15 hours. All in all the game in my opinion is: 'Alright'.
