Like Silent Hunter III ... tenously... with sloops and pinnaces rather than Type IX subs. Obviously there are differences: There's an RPG and trade system, of sorts. You can't navigate to X from Y using real world methods like you can in SHIII. Earth's curviture and world space is far too scripted for that kind of thing e.g. the landmass you think is 2 days in-game to reach is a much shorter trip but yea it IS roughly in that direction. Far more constrained world so the sandbox factor isn't so prevalent or apparent. Cracking fun though.

The word "sublime" is bandied around a lot in media circles, whether this be used to describe a painting, written work or performance or what-have-you. Sunless Sea is that sublime 'event' in gaming that may comfortably sit alongside 'The Void' and 'Planescape:Torment' as labours of love by people who know they're enormously creative and innovative and happy to let us know it. Sunless Sea is something to be experienced rather than play; it's not perfect but what is? Someone once wrote that upon logging into EvE Online, they felt a sense of unease and apprehension; that is exactly what some players are going to feel launching Sunless Sea for the Nth time. Recommended? Of course it is.
