Firstly, I was a little miffed by the DOSBox-powered version offered here on GOG. Though it is as close a port as you'll get (on paper), it has a few bugs: - The sound effects are all out of sync with the action, it has some graphical glitches and more. So 3/5 for this port. However, buying this allows you to download the free eduke32 (dukeworld.duke4.net or eduke32.com) which can be played in a stripped back old looking style that's extremely close to the original and a far better fit for todays machines - allowing for proper HD presentation and widescreen. Eduke32 also allows for 3D mods etc. in case you want to vandalise -*ahem* 'improve'-the original :P. The game: Duke Nukem 3D is a timeless, ageless classic. Obviously the graphics are of a time, but if you're reading this I'm sure you don't care about all that. The gameplay is fantastic. Very satisfying, over-the-top, imaginative, thumpy weapons; baddies that are fun to test them out on, and great sound effects too. Level design is fantastic and varied too; way ahead of it's time. More than a Doom clone; it should not be underestimated how much this game is responsible for shaping the genre with it's quite exploratory, almost 'adventury' elements, and memorable set-piece moments that we take for granted these days, all whilst being rooted proudly in the - sadly side-lined these days - 'corridor shooter' genre. A real blast from the past and genuinely one of the greatest FPS games ever created.
