DOOM (1993)

The furious grand old man of the FPSes

It is just remarkable how well Doom's game design, graphics, level design, music, and sound design holds up after all these years. One can't look up or down within the game, which is a fact, but a fact which is actually surprisingly easy to get over and fast too. I reckon it literally took some two minutes before I was laser focused on the stupidly fast demon-slaying action and hunting for clues of hidden goodies within the levels which, by the way, are an embodiment of a lot done with surprisingly little. Looking up or down? Just not a factor I remembered to miss after that initial two minutes. And the way how Doom sounds like... oh ho ho ho... it still triggers the impulse to tap my foot along the catchy bleep-bloop-metal tunes broken only by the screams of the flat demons reduced into flat piles of minced meat by a side-stepping marine equipped with a shotgun. Ah, and how's that shotgun? Yes, we all know how important a good shotgun is within the FPS-genre, don't we? Well, it is not the most powerful weapon in the game, but it is the one with a pleasantly steady supply of shells and just enough of oomph to stick to unless if the situation within the game doesn't warrant to temporarily switching to something a bit more suitable, either for the sake of health or ammo economy. Still worth playing today. As if that's news, considering the community of brilliant geeks who over the years have expanded, upgraded, and gotten this game to run on all manner of devices which were not even supposed to run games to begin with... like cameras and calculators. *Sigh* Yeah, got to admit that as far as making memes out of things goes... this one definitely is worth every single damn one.
