Back to the Future: The Game

Watch the movies first!

I got this on Steam and played it eight months ago there, so I write this from my memory that might be faulty. There are several aspects to be considered for Back To The Future: The Game. First of all, if you have no clue what this is about, you will either be confused or at least miss some of the charme. So - I can not stress this enough! - watch the movies before you play this! The gameplay itself is not too interesting - standard adventure cost with some minigames - but the story of the first four episodes is great if you've seen the movies, and it even also often references them. If you do not like the movies, you do not like this game. Skip it then, sorry. Gameplay: 6/10 The gameplay consists of you walking around with the mouse to only fixed spots, talking to people by multiple choice dialogues, solving mostly easy riddles. There were only two times where I used a solution, and that was after trying seemingly everything, because I couldn't find the sequence of what to do or the spot where I had to click. Probably there would have been a key to see everything you can click, but I can't confirm that since I never used it - it is standard since The Tales of Monkey Island for Telltale Games, though.. There is not much time travel involved in puzzles, so you will never switch back and forth from different timelines to solve them, like you would have done in for example Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Rather you are mostly in a certain time and try to fix things there. Music: 10/10 Are you kidding me? Why do people never use the original music due to licensing or whatever? Back To The Future is a rather small project - an adventure by the still rather small Telltale Games - and they get the original score and use it greatly! The music just is fitting, its use follows the movies. And THEY HAVE THE MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES! Graphics: 7/10 Here we have a big critic point. The graphics are - as can be seen on the screenshot - rather outdated. However, the places are nicely created so the graphics never look like they come from the stone age, they are just not modern. Nethack's graphics are horrible and it still is a great game, so the graphics should not turn you off, just don't expect them to get any better than on the screenshots. Sadly there are also not many options regarding the graphics. If you played for example the Sam & Max episodes (not to be confused with the 1993 game Hit the Road), the graphics is pretty much the same, just slightly better. There is one very good thing about the graphics, and that is the characters - if you've seen the movies, you will instantly recognize Marty and co. - the figures very much resemble those from the movies. Story: 8/10 If it wasn't for the weak last game, the story would get a 10/10 from me. Point! The story brings you some more nice hours with Marty & Co. Also, movie elements are used multiple times in the games, as a nice bonus who remember them. As an easy example, when the DeLorean is used, the theme music of the movies plays just like it did there. I don't want to spoiler here, but the story of the final chapter is not really fitting into the rest of the series and the finale was a disappointment to me. It looked like they too much forced the story to end and then failed writing it. Conclusion: This game surely does not belong to the usual BTTF games. It is finally a good game about the movies. What is better, it does not retell the movie storyline but come up with a sideline of its own, that however is considered non-canon. With the exception of the final chapter, I feel like everything was polished. Facts: Length: 10-15 hours (2-3 hours for each of the five episodes) Genre: Adventure (Comedy with a bit of science fiction) Prerequisites: Knowledge about the movies is very much recommended, best might be to watch them again - or for the first time? - shortly before you play this. Recommended: Yes As a notice to people who saw my votings on another site where I gave scores of around 6/10: Remember that I had to rate single episodes there, and I am also using a different scale there, so everything with 6+ points there can be considered to be good. On GOG I use numbers like they're commonly used in magazines etc. Also, as a whole the game is more than the sum of its parts.
