Yes, believe what others say: Planescape is truly a masterpiece. However, it is not without it flaws. And just because they do everything differently than what you might be used to from other AD&D-products doesn't necessarily mean it is better because of that. And, honestly, a lot of people just like it because it is different. People praise the story but what they really are praising is the setting, the characters and the interesting philosophical questions. The story, however, is not all that great or original and will leave you unsatisfied - there are too many plotholes and logic faults. It is good, yes, but certainly not the best story ever. Also, the game becomes *work* - especially towards the ending. And, well, there is *a lot* to read. If you don't like reading, this is certainly not your game (and honestly, I feel they went a little overboard). Besides everything it is, as I have said, truly a masterpiece and I highly recommend it!
