A Golden Wake

Abysmal

The first 30 minutes of this game are amazing and very good. The Jazz music, the characters, the entire setting sets you up for a good experience. And then.. the puzzles are shallow, when they are not trivial, they border on the innane. The character of the main persona you're playing as is terrible, uncouth and just plain unrelateable. Mid-game, this point'and'click still shows some promise and, maybe, I can find some redeeming qualities to it. The art is good, the sound is good. But the end-game... the last 30 minutes of this game are utterly horrendous. You, as the player, have such a limited array of options. The morality of your main character is suddenly changed on a dime. You are left with options, none of them remotely good. This game ends in a trainwreck. I do not recommend it. The story starts decent but the last 30 minutes are utterly SO BAD that I regretted buying it. Dev, do better. The entire ending arc was abysmal, forlorn, horrible and just.. sad.

Can I refund this?

I make a habit of stockpiling adventure games. I play most of them, some I let linger. I came back to this five times and I couldn't get past the starting room. She has a cabinet FULL of medicine, but she refuses to take any AND she can't get out the door because of a hangover. Can the writing be any sadder? I cannot be bothered to look for an online walkthrough. Mate, if I can't get out of the tutorial, your game is broken.

Milkmaid of the Milky Way

Perfect 2-hour adventure

This is an amazing play experience for any Point'n'Click enthusiasts. The story is good, the art is amazing, the music and feel is just perfect. If you loved any game from Monkey Island to Grim Fandango or Broken Sword, you will adore this. Tiny, cute, good & pure. Better than any movie you could watch in the same time span.

Brassheart Demo

Great little demo!

This is a 5-10 minute demo, very cute and well drawn. Childish in parts, with a simple attractive story very similar to the first Indiana Jones (movie, not games - it's siller and more light hearted than the games). Overall this promises to be quite the fun and light adventure. It behaves in the classic adventure way, with an inventory, skippable dialog, etc. I really enjoyed this and wishlisted the final product. As a background, I have played all the Monkey Islands and almost all old Sierra games, as well as the Blackwell series and almost everything Wadjet outputs - and a plethora of others. If you liked those you'll probably want to play this demo too.

Cinders

Lovely, relaxing and deep

Gorgeous game, beautifully drawn - with a limited cast and a limited number of locations, but all of them rich and engrossing... almost but not really based on the classic tale. You have to be in the right mood for this, truly - it's a very peaceful experience and if you just want to skip to the end, you'll regret it and you won't get anything out of it. It has a plethora of branching storylines and a bunch of endings, the main character is believeable, relateable and well written. One storyline takes about 2 hours in a leisurely run, but you'll need about 5 if you want to experience everything. Saving is supported and you can save on top of pivotal plot choices so you can explore other endings. I had a peaceful evening playing this, totally would recommend if you feel nostalgic and want a great VN.

The Plague Doctor of Wippra

Refunded

I really wanted to like this. It felt like The Last Door/Milkmaid of the Milky Way in a nice medieval setting. The game feels like a Demo. It costs 10 euros but it takes about 1 hour to finish (there's a walkthrough on Youtube if you look for it - 70 minutes with all cutscenes and without skipping dialogue!!!!). I only played for about 20 minutes and I was like 30% done with the game and it felt like it didn't even start yet. 1. The sounds are very annoying. There's a scene at the beginning with a wailing baby. That was the first time I wanted to ask for a refund. 2. The quests are very linear and very poorly written. You are a doctor and you enter someone's house and YOU have to find a way to light a lamp. Why? No real reason. 3. There are about 10 scenes in the whole game. Compare this to "Milkmaid of the Milky Way" which is very similar, but very rich in storyline, scenes, artwork and story. 4. There is no story. Dialogues fall flat, nothing feels real. 5. The puzzles are not logical and they are not enjoyable. Most of the puzzles I experienced (you are a DOCTOR!!!) would be solved by just asking for the items you want, because everyone (nuns, nurses, etc.) are supposed to be your minions. You are a surgeon and a nurse asks you to fill a bucket of water. Enough said. This is what a student would work on for half a semester to get a decent degree. This is not a finished product.

Prince of Qin

Very nice surprise!

I got this at a bargain price (under 2€), and the main reason I actually installed it and played it was that it reminded me of Baldur's Gate and all the good ones. It is that and more. Fresh story, nice gameplay, cute dialogue. I loved it very much. The only reason this is not a 5-star game is because it's not that entertaining. It's long and with a winded story that gets a bit boring and a bit frustrating, and the enemies scale up with you so there's never a "wow I'm strong moment". At the beginning you kill things with a wooden club, in the middle you kill things with a golden spear. It feels the same. But the nostalgia is there, the graphics are awesome and the locales are just gorgeous. I love playing it from time to time, but I'm not sure I will invest the full 40 hours needed to actually finish it.

Blades of Time

Gorgeous game, horrible gameplay

This game looks and feels and plays beautifully. It has a Final Fantasy vibe in a Tomb Raider setting, and it delivers exactly what it promises from the screenshots. You're a fantasy version of Lara Croft, battling endless monsters in superb landscapes. Why the 2 stars? The gameplay is horrible. Nothing ever fits, the bosses are horrendous, all you seem to do is turn on buttons and levers and there are no real puzzles or any sense of danger other than danger of boredom or extreme frustration. This is not a good game, you will not have fun. It's a pity because the artstyle is perfectly beautiful and I wanted to like and finish this, but 6 hours in I just couldn't take the boredom anymore. Such a pity. Great potential here.

Catie in MeowmeowLand

Weird, quirky, surreal experience!

This was just an amazing experience - forget all you know about logic, reason and cause&effect in point-and-click games.. just let yourself go down the cathole in this amazing parody of Alice in Wonderland (and imagine what a parody of Alice can be, when Alice was itself a parody of the real world). The art is top knotch, the story is delivered with ease and without the use of words. We thoroughly enjoyed this game (about 4-5 hours tops, if you don't use any guides, and about 1-2 hours if you just rush through the puzzles). It was marvelous, to be honest. It lacks all the tropes and mechanics you'd expect from a "normal"/"standard" point-and-click game and seems to be amazingly content to just be fresh, weird and TOTALLY out of the ordinary. Play this if you want something different in the adventure genre.

Song of Farca: Prologue

Play it!

If you played even just one adventure point-and-click game in your life and enjoyed it, play this! The actual game is more of the same - much more of the same - and you will probably like getting involved with the huge world of Farca. It's an interesting world, colourful, diverse, ripe with characters and possibilities. This is not a fun experience. It's bittersweet, maybe even sad at times. But definitely give the demo a go. It's WELL worth your time. This will be under 30 minutes. It's worth your 30 minutes, trust me.
