Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six®

Garbage

Game has terrible AI squadmates that frequently bug out, limp regardless of commands, walk into walls, ignore attacking enemies, etc. This game is so hard to play it's a wonder it got sequels. When the entire selling point of the game is that you can command a squad to carry out tactics, and they can't do their one job... yeah, that's a problem.

Intravenous

A Great Game Held Back By Top Down View

I think this is a very good game. The gun-play is great, the stealth is great, and the AI is great. What holds this back however, is top down view. There is only so much that can be done with the camera to be able to see enemies around you, but you will still get shot by off-screen enemies frequently. Other than that the game is just the right length not to overstay it's welcome. Overall a great retro stealth game worth playing.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Classic Edition

Frustrating from start to finish

While certainly not the worst game I have played by any means, this title is littered with questionable design decisions, backtracking, quest bugs, and linearity. The game is split into two parts, Arizona and LA. They might as well be the base game and an expansion- once you leave Arizona you can never return. Quests are often confusing to follow and too obtuse in instructions. Some main quests require collectathons to find items hidden amongst settlments. And the combat, oh lord... talk about unbalanced. The guns are a complete hit or miss compared to melee.

Mad Max

Overrated open world collect-athon

This game has a cult following. I suppose it scratches a certain itch that Fallout and other post apocolyptic games miss. However, the game is very shallow and is a low effort movie tie-in. It's basically a Mad Max coat of paint over Arkham Knight.... without a good story, characters, interesting objectives, rewards, etc. It's a hollow shell made to promote Fury Road and it shows. You will have seen all the game has to offer in about 2 hours. Oh, and it has progression blocking bugs. That's a BIG problem YEARS after its release.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

It's Okay.

I just played it for the first time in 2023 and I wouldn't say it is any better than the recent reboot games. It was fun but not particularly interesting. Felt like a sequel to Goldeneye- very similar gameplay.

The Saboteur™

Fun, but repetitive and bland

I am a massive fan of modern open world games. I've played a lot of them, so comparatively, I had trouble rating this. The star of the show, the world, is unique and immersive. I've never seen a WWII game that takes place on the civilian end, particularly occupied Paris. However, everything else feels weak and uninteresting, even for Pandemic's catalog. The only real activities outside side missions are to blow up Nazi structures. Unfortunately it's very easy and they are EVERYWHERE. Like, two every city block or more. It becomes repetitive and uninteresting. Especially since the main missions pretty much ask you to do the same. There isn't really any depth to the gameplay and the story is bland. Go to location, shoot Nazis and blow up a thing. Rinse and repeat. I had fun playing it, but compared to other GTA-likes, this one is on the worse end.

Omerta: City of Gangsters (4 DLCs included)

Boring

This game is really boring. I'm not a big fan of strategy/business games but I liked the time period and themes so I gave it a shot. It's a lot of fun at first, building businesses in order to make money, and using that money to do that more. There are some combat scenarios and they are "okay", not particularly interested but not terrible either. The problem with the game is that it's cut into scenarios, which have you repeat the same tasks over and over from scratch to progress the story. Once you find your winning rhythm, it gets dry. For transparency, I played this game on easy- and did so because the combat is Xcom style RNG nonsense. However, you can not differentiate what is easy mode for the business gameplay and the combat, it's just one option. I wish I could play harder business with easy combat... but I can't.

MX vs. ATV Unleashed

A Flawed Attempt at MX

I did not play this game in my childhood so this is my first time playing this title. With racing games, what you see is what you get. You drive motorbikes and ATVs on dirt tracks with jumps. You can do tricks in the air as well. The problem I had with this game is the insane rubber banding of the AI. It is the most intense I've seen in a game and it can make the experience infuriating on more difficult tracks. The AI will always clump together no matter if you are ahead or behind. If you are in the pack, the leads will make PERFECT jumps and turns, making it extremely hard to get and stay in first place. One poorly made jump will lead you to be overtaken instantly. It doesn't feel natural and really hurt the fun factor for me.

Vampyr

One of the worst games of recent years

This game is really bad. I really only have negative things to say, I'm a little less than halfway through the game and I'm contemplating uninstalling. I haven't really had any fun since I started playing. The gameplay of this game consists of navigating a small, poorly designed open city with dead ends and alleys that all look the same- something that gets confusing and frustrating fast. Because you have to move around and backtrack often, you will encounter the same 3 enemies over and over and over and over and over and higher and higher levels. And the leveling system? Either make the world worse by killing civilians to become stronger, or get the perfect ending by killing nobody and smashing your head against a wall while you get one-shot by basic enemies. Seriously... I've gotten hit standing behind an enemy. They slide towards you during attacks and even do 180 degree turns like their lock-on is a magnet. Meanwhile, you will constantly miss enemies in front of you cuz you barely move forward when attacking. Lastly, you need to keep each district healthy, which consists of crafting medicine and giving it to people. Imagine pressing a few buttons to craft a thing you don't see, have to go through the chore of walking around the entire map handing out medicine to each person one by one (with no real benefit), only for them to get sick again later. This is a textbook example of how NOT to make an enjoyable experience.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

A Flawed attempt at the Stealth Genre

Desperados is a western themed tactical stealth game. It has a lot of what you would expect from the genre. However, it fails hard in playability. So often my actions do not fire. I have double clicked multiple times on things only for the selected character to idle in place and do nothing. I've had characters deselect themselves during actions. The lack of a tactical pause makes it extremely hard to click and make quick decisions. Another peeve of mine is the fun factor and freedom- you really can't do things your own way. There are very limited tactics for each situation, so it feels like you are completing a puzzle than being on your own adventure. I have not yet played Desperados 2, but I hope a lot of these issues get resolved, as it completely hurts the experience.
