Syberia: The World Before Prologue

An audio/visual orgy

This is about the best I can say about this prologue. The ingredients seem to be there: An oppressive regime at the height of its power, another on the rise, Kate Walker, Oscar, stunning scenes where it isn't difficult to feel terror, cold, angst of Kate and Dana. Will they survive to see another day? What will the guards do? Will there be a cave-in? Will one or the other be able to escape? The glimmer of hope when a guard is friendly crushed all too sudden by the harsh reality of the place. Introspection, jumps between present and past to learn about the character's backstory. Well done! Scenes are open to interpretation: Is Kate in a relationship with Dana by necessity? Or is it genuine human feelings driving their actions? Then this: "Oh I landed here because I decided to rebel and join a punk-band ...", Sorry? WHAT? If this was to add a brief moment of comic relief ... which doesn't seem to be the case ... Way off ... It ruins the dense atmosphere ... If it was something like: "Someone heard me playing a partisan song ... I was arrested, beaten during interrogation and brought to this mine to pay for it ...". There is also the questionable hair style. Reflecting reality prisoners would have long hair or no hair at all. A strange choice to say the least ... So, what's good, what's bad? Dialogue described as: gripping, which to me is just plain bad for the most part while some are outstanding ... A hit and miss. Performance is very good for the most part, audio and visuals are superb! Playing this was a short and sweet experience, far from outstanding, with some let-down's. The good impression is easily ruined when there is an identifiable agenda at play. My hope is that it will not end up being some agenda driven nonsense which in a game like this it simply got no place. Do away with this Punk Band idea and whatever else the script writer's been coming up with and stick to the theme and time the story is set to play in.
