GRIS

Decent but overrated

A beautiful 2D world and a good soundtrack. You play as a young woman making your way through linear levels, gaining new abilities and some unique skill not previously seen in 2D games. The game is a bit unclear, what is happening and why should you care? The puzzles are easy, the game is linear and exploration is unrewarding. There are no enemies and no reasons for replaying. Overall a decent game that will take around 4 hours to complete. It's ok, but definitely not a masterpiece like some other reviewers suggest.

No Man's Sky

Exploring, building and upgrading

No Man's Sky (NMS) is a pretty good game in 2019. It's a game about exploring space, planets and building stuff on procedurally generated worlds. Tons of free updates have added lots of good things to this game, like new missions (questslines), crafting and gameplay tweaks. Submit yourself to the (minor) grind of NMS to escape the daily grind of real life. The game starts out as a survival game. You constantly need to scavenge resources with your mining laser, find oxygen and earn credits just to stay alive. Life support and the mining laser drain fast and your inventory will always be full. Not enough money to buy a new (or extra) ship, no blueprints available for constructing a nice base and pirates keep shooting you up. Half the time is spent recharging equipment and mining resources, the other half running from agressive sentinels, wildlife or pirates. The mid game looses this survival aspect. You can warp to an almost infinite amount of star systems, build some pretty decent bases and combat becomes easier. Inventory upgrades combined with life support and environmental shielding make the enviroment a lot more manageable. The game casually introduces multiple ships and frigates, which can go on adventures while you do other stuff. As you progress towards the end game, which will take at least 50-100 hours when playing causally, the game really starts to shine. Credits roll in and you realize spending a few grand on resources every now and then will save you the trouble of manually mining. Bases start to look beautiful as you unlock more base parts. There are tons of different parts, from small decals and little rooms to large glass domes and landing pads to beautify your base. At this stage the game becomes a relaxing exploration game. Own multiple ships, vehicles, farms and even underwater bases. What's not to like? The game will stutter heavly at times. Quests will break, even main questlines sometimes get stuck, although I always found a workaround.

Flawed masterpiece

An awesome and epic open world roleplaying game. This game has aged well overall, giving players a sense of freedom and awe that is hard to match in other games. It hits the sweet spot between immersion, amount of skills, items, freedom and complexity. Oblivion is in my top 10 list together with Witcher 3 and Fallout New Vegas. If you like these games, you will probably like Oblivion as well. Compared to other open world games you are engaged in a world where life is going pretty smooth for most NPCs. There is no hunger like the desperate parts of Velen in the Witcher 3. You are not constantly scoffed at for being an outlander, like in Morrowind. And you actually have to work hard to become a guildmaster, unlike Skyrim. Besides the main quest the world is less dark than other Bethesda open world games, which is a nice change. You can buy houses, decorate them and go everywhere at any level, which is both its strength and weakeness. What is not to like? Combat gets predictable after a while. If you level up while neglecting combat skills, the enemies scale to your level, not your skills and will become too strong for your character. Also, the game looks dated, but this can be fixed with a handful of mods. Because it's a Behesda game it is build on the degenerate Gamebryo engine, coming with all its quirks and bugs. Mods. I recommend at least the unofficial patches, QTP3 (texture mod) and more heap + stutter remover (stability).
