Control is amazing. The look and feel is endearing and mysterious, the story telling is great. The atmosphere is thick as fogg and exploring the world, half lovecraft, half SCP is extremely satisfying. However, all these good ideas and the extraordinary storytelling is thrown to sub-par gameplay that feels it is only there for the developers to justify it as a "game" towards the gamer crowd. Fetch-quest follows fetch-quest; shooting range follows shooting range, everything feels the same. For some reason the developers also felt necessary to clutter their mystery action-adventure not only with 3rd-person shooting, sluggish, outdated and uninspired but also with RPG leveling up and customization of weapons on top which turns the whole experience into a chore that is in the way of an amazing story. The whole gameplay is a massive climb down qualitywise from Allan wake that came years before Control. It is actually a shame.
The game is not beautiful. In fact, the whole gloom and undifined, round forms hurt the ees. It is just ugly as hell. The controls are a mess and the tutorial alone is so messily done that you lose any idea what you have to do and what your goal is - in the TUTORIAL! All in all absolutely not worth of a game to engage with.
A rough Gem. The game looks amazing, sounds great, is very atmospheric and a true work of love that can be seen in every detail. I love the game principle and who the gameplay feels. However, it is very rough around the edges. It has a lot of managing and a high level of details - but these details never get introduced well so it is sometimes like a gamble whether you have understood the mechanics properly. And unfortunately, it just gets boring. The gameplay loops over and over and over again and does not provide much more, which is so unfortunate. On the one hand you have highly detailed management, on the other hand there is just the same three missions being done dozens of time. I do absolutely not regret having bought the game on a discount. But it is definately a bit too rough to give it more stars.
The game LOOKS amazing and sounds AMAZING! But too bad: The execution is horrible. The predetermined controls are not so good, keys can not be remapped and the game responds just slugish, slow which is an absolute fun killer for this kind of game, unfortunately. It just does not work properly.
It's good enough for a lazy sunday afternoon with two or three hours to spend. It is very nice and very charming, but the charm wears off as you realize that there is not that much to do and it gets a bit repetitive. Good for acouple hours, if you got 2 Euros or 3.
A modern platformer that does not recognize on its own a normal xBox controller is just not worth it. Some keys the game recognizes, some not, and a remapping of the keys or manual set-up is not available in the game option. Under these circumstances absolutely not worth it!
