I was lured by the positive reviews but the game makes my Alienware Aurora R4 behave erratically: as soon as I install it, it causes an instananous reboot as soon as I hit "Launch the game" button. This has never happened with no other game, not from this store nor from Steam. All the leds went crazy as if it was christmas, and just so you know, AA R4 has a LOT of them. The only time I managed to launch the game, it took 5 minutes to get to the "ALIENWARE" advertisement - no way! the game is actually advertising Alienware! - and then stuck so badly I had to cold reboot. All problems went away the moment I uninstalled it. I wanted to put it here so that the devs might actually see it.
This is the most faithful homage to the original game you can get. It's less gamey than the XCOM Enemy Unknown released by Firaxis - it's says it is a Planetary Defence Simulator and it's right. The Air War is very well done and fun to play. The ground combat is as deep as the original one but much smoother. Graphics - you either hate it or love it. Personally I love it, it's old-school, it's crisp and clean and very elegant. It's also very well written: ufopedia is a joy to read, so much that you can't wait for that next research result! It's very "feet on the ground", so every new discovery or development will be well explained - with no gamey magic a là Firaxis Xcom. Heck, it's even better than the original. Music is great. Made by the same composer that created the soundtrack for Amnesia, if I'm not mistaken. It's very moody, suitable dark and downright terrifying at times. It recreates the atmosphere the original had perfectly. Bottomline, if you like turned-based games or you're a fan of the original, then this is a MUST-BUY.
