Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

3.5/5 A Decent Game

Bug Fables is a colourful and shiny tactical adventure game. Apart from upgrading some stats, there are no Role-Playing Elements (no actual character or story choices). Many compare it to Paper Mario, but I have never played that game, so I didn’t have the nostalgia bias when writing this review. It took me around 37 hours to do almost everything on Hard mode. The Good: Well-made and detailed world. Fun exploration. Decent story An excellent distraction from coronavirus The Bad: Default PC controls are awful. Some keys can not be remapped. More effort should have been out into PC release. Difficult to play without a controller. Too much grind Some options are clearly better than others. While some builds are also viable, others are obviously superior and save a lot of time. Essential Tips for Blind Playthrough: Google Food Recipes. Food turns impossible fights into trivial ones. Bank is the number one place to earn money. After 500 on your account, the return rate doubles (3% vs 6%) Summary: Clearly above average. A lot of effort and care was put into development. But the grind and PC-unfriendliness marr the experience. A big nostalgia bonus for previous Paper Mario fans. 3.5/5

Darkest Dungeon Soundtrack

CoM is MIA

Great OST, but music form Color of Madness is sadly missing. Hopefully, it will be added later. Red Hook can`t just forget it has people buying it on other platforms...

Into the Breach

Mech Chess with RNG Elements

For starters, I have never played any previous Subset Games` Game (namely, FTL). But I have enjoyed playing this very much. So much, that I´m writing a review for this, which is something that I don`t do regularly (so far I have written only 1). Into the Breach is an easy to learn, difficult to master kind of a game. It looks like chess, but there is a surprising amount of depth to the tactical combat here. I will not go into a lot of details here (other people could describe it better than I do), and you can always go to YouTube to watch the gameplay. Suffice it to say, the gameplay is solid and relatively bug-free (or vek-free, at the end of most missions). So far, I have only experienced one bug - with GOG in-game overlay. The UI is very well communicated to the player. You are always informed about what is going to happen, and there is always an option to test all of your mechs before starting a new mission. So if you are not sure how a weapon functions - you can always test it, and see the results. Sadly, RNG can sometimes be unforgiving. For example, you have very damaged mechs, and the worst possible combination of enemies emerges from the ground, and outright destroys you. But starting over is something that you do naturally in this game, and you can keep your best pilot with you for the next run. By my statistics, I have about 50% win/lose ratio, which is also partially associated with achievement hunting. The achievements help you unlock new squads, and generally feel difficult, but rewarding. A lot of fun could be had with the custom and random squads - and I am sure a lot of streamers will be playing around with these. All in all, a surprisingly good game that I have nearly missed. I have never heard about it until its release on GOG, but I bought it, and never regretted it. The developers put a lot of effort into this game, and it shows. And if you like games like XCOM, it is a must-have.

Skyshine's BEDLAM Redux!

Broken mechanics with no fix in sight

I got this game in a Star (GOG´s version of a loot box) during the Christmas Sale and started to play it blind, with no prior knowledge. First thing first, the atmosphere of the game is great, and the cartoon-ish visuals look rather charming. But then you discover that the mechanics of the game are broken, and it doesnt follow its own rules. For example, you always end your turn when you move 4 characters of your party. For most fights, that IS the maximum amount of guys you have on the battlefield, but not for ALL. And when you have more, you choose who to move, and others just wait there. Of course, the AI does not have this problem. When it has 8 monsters on the battlefield, they all have their turns. The only saving grace here is the sheer stupidity of the AI. Otherwise it would overwhelm most fights in a matter of turns. And the player would have no chance of winning, even with the powerfull player abilities. I played for about 4 hours in total, then got very FRUSTRATED with this game, and decided to write this review in an effort to spare others of a horrible experience. I can write a whole list of broken things I have seen in this game, but this would take too much time to read. As you can see, this is a Redux. an "improved" version of the game. And while the game runs well, the game mechanics are broken, with no hope to be ever repaired. Long story short, do NOT buy this game. It was never properly tested, even after a second release. Such treatment of paying customers is appalling, please do NOT support the developers until they show at least some sort of effort.
