As others have wrote, the game consistently crashes after the introductory level. This crash is not limited to a particular setup. I suspect most of the 5 star reviewers do not actually own this version specifically, but have merely played this game in the past. Maybe the game is great, but that does not help if it is broken. No idea why GOG sells this, usually just about everything on this site works just fine.
Fantastic game by Headfirst Productions, those guys from Horrorsoft who brought us great titles like Elvira 1+2, Waxworks etc! In contrast to those older 90s games, Call of Cthulhu offers realtime 3D. The genre is somewhat similar though, a mixture of adventure and action elements. Overall the quality of the graphics and sound is not quite as groundbreaking as the earlier games were, probably due to the long development time. The athmosphere is just as great, however. Another issue with the game is its bugs, I could not complete the game due to a major bug near the ending.
This graphic/text adventure came out before the excellent Elvira series and Waxworks. Unfortunately it is not as good. My biggest gripe is the lack of music during the game, and that it is basically impossible to beat the game without a walkthrough. Even with a walkthrough it can be impossible to finish the game due to bugs. I read though that the GOG version actually can be beaten. Only reason I'm giving Personal Nightmare a 4/5 is that I'm such a big fan of the Horrorsoft games, and that the athmosphere of the game is pretty good, almost as good as in the later installments.
So it's a Lucasfilm point+click adventure in collaboration with Steven Spielberg, hence it must be awesome, right? Sadly, no. The Dig is a good game, but in my mind, it is not on the same level as other Lucasfilm titles. The game starts out well, with good writing and characters, decent voice-acting and nice atmosphere, but quickly becomes boring. Furthermore, either the game design or programming seems sloppy, as I ran into a situation where it was impossible to make progress without starting over and doing things in a different order- unusual for the high-quality Lucasfilm titles. Unless you have completed most or all other Lucasfilm games, this game is ihmo not a must-have.
I like 3D games that deviate from the boring 3D Ego Shooter theme, Firewatch is such a game. Firewatch is some kind of very basic 3D adventure where you work as a Firewatcher in the wilderness from a lookout tower. The game focuses on the interaction over radio between you and a fellow female firewatcher. Since the puzzles are largely about simply going somewhere, it could be seen as an interactive movie, too. The first hour or so of the game starts very nicely, but afterwards the story just feels weird. Many here complain about the ending, but I don't think the ending alone is the problem. It rather feels as if the developers ran out of ideas or budget too quickly. Also the interactivity is very limited for a game like this. The atmosphere depends on the good graphics and sound as well as the voice acting, which is ok but could have been improved by allowing you to perform some more basic things like throwing rocks into the sea, encountering animals etc. Since I bought it discounted I still give it 4/5 stars just for being a nice and unique game, but I recommend to not spend more than $10 on this.
Loved Shadowgate and the other Icom games back then! This remake is technically alright, but not much fun ihmo. I finished about half of the game but then really got too bored to proceed any further. I can't really tell what's wrong with this game, perhaps this is a type of game that simply does not age well. For the price there is ihmo much better games on gog.com.
I got the bundle for $1,49 on a discount and even that feels too much, sorry. Wizardry 7 does not run in DoxBox, but instead in some weird custom window that cannot be resized it seems. For me this makes the game unplayable, and I can't be arsed to set up an old PC just for the purpose of playing this game! Supposedly most of the 5-star ratings are coming from people who rated the old game, as it was BACK THEN- not what it is TODAY. Unless you still run Windows with some stoneage monitor and resolution, spare your money and get something else, like Legend Of Grimrock for instance. I still give it 3 stars because W6 runs in DosBox and is thus configurable; no stars for W7.
For me this is the best turn-based strategy game ever, easily on the same level as X-Com, just different. It not only has a good combat and inventory system, but also lots of interesting things around that, such as a micro- and macro strategy level. Story is great and the game has a nice ending sequence for the time, which also changes depending on your actions throughout the game if I recall correctly. There is also JA 2 with higher resolution graphics. To me neither the gameplay nor story of JA 2 are nearly as good as in JA1, however, so if you can live with the low-res graphics, be sure to try JA 1.
I had never heard of this game until 2015. This is an amazing medieval strategy game in a style similar to Warcraft and other old-school real-time strategy games, one that still works excellent today. The game comes in HD resolution so don't worry you won't have to copy with a resolution of 300x240 pixels or something. Stronghold differs from Warcraft in that the computer opponents do not build anything, attacks are somewhat scripted. There is a main campaign plus lots of extra missions to choose from, so it doesn't get boring too quickly. Only weakness of the game is a poorly balanced difficulty level. Several missions, including some of the main campaign, have virtually unplayable missions even at normal difficulty level. Looking up solutions on Youtube, it seems as if the only way to beat those missions is to exploit bugs in the game and/or the enemy AI. This is ihmo poor game design, and a problem no other RTS has (to the best of my knowledge). Still a great game, and a must have! Overall rating 4.5/5
