Undying is an FPS with an emphasis on atmosphere and story. It’s up there with games like Portal for just sucking you in and keeping you there. The game is beautiful. I don't just mean that the graphic are nice. Every room in the Gormangast-like mansion in which the game is set has tons of love poured into it. Thanks to the design and details every environment stands out from the last. Rural Ireland is invoked to beautiful and terrifying effect. I’ll never forget the sense of agoraphobia I felt approaching the high ruined monastery with a deep howling coming from down below. The intact monastery with snow all around and plainsong heard from inside is awe-inspiring, but slightly chilling. Look out for a section of the house clearly inspired by La Bell a Le-Bett. Unlike modern scary games Undying doesn't try to scare by simply nerfing your ability to fight, you get a really fun set of weapons and spells. It gets to you with creepy imagery, sounds and moments. A very spooky story (Seriously read all the text, it enhances the game tenfold), best of all a constant feeling of dread. You never feel safe unless the game wants you to (and that’s rare). Undying is a very scary game but it’s also really fun sometimes, some parts have a strong adventure feeling, it feels like Half-life at times. More than a horror FPS. Like being in a novel and a dream at the same time. Recommended even if you are not a horror fan
