Action packed side scroller with some platform elements. The graphics are cool and detailed with in-your-face sound effects and a great soundtrack. If you are familiar with platform games then this game is a cinch. The variety of attacks adds a nice touch to the gameplay. No dull moments here. You swing your sword and use Mana attacks to kill demons and monsters without much of a break. I personally love games like this. It keeps you on your toes. If you like games with non-stop excitement and action, this is for you. If you want a drama story where you spend more time watching your character talk to NPCs, then I'd steer clear of this. The frenetic energy of this game attracts players who want to get right to it and start hacking bad guys to pieces. If that sounds like you, then get this game ASAP. Also, no bugs or issues were detected. Install and play immediately!
I've been investing some time in the "Kain" games recently, and I've gotten mixed results. First, you need to solve the DirectX issue if you want to play this on Win10: https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases Copy that and stick it in the game folder, and the game works right. GOG should have done this in the first place... Anyway, this game is a real chore. Long, dragegd out cut scenes that you cannot skip seem to be the biggest complaint. Yes, the story is lovely and all but let's be real about this: we play video games to play them. At least that's what I do. The story should be integrated in the gameplay, and games like this come across as pretentious when the first 45 minutes of the game is spent watching videos. This has been an unfuriating part of how video games have evolved, to the point where with some games, like this one, actually playing the game is secondary to the screenplay. One scene took so long that my controller went into sleep mode. Not a good sign. I am pretty disappointed. At least I fixed the bug, but in the end, who cares? Same points are 1 hour apart and the majority of your time is spent "with the story" and the rest of the gameplay is shallow and boring. I'm moving on. For hard core fans only.
I just started playing this game and it rocks. I have no issues with the controls and I am using a controller. I couldn't get my controller to work in some of the previous entries in the series but I was able to get it to work in this game. I absolutely love it. I'm having no issues with moving Kain around and attacking. I highly recommend this game and I'm sure you will have a similar experience as I. Can't wait to get further in this game and hack some people to pieces and drink their blood!
This is one of those games that you think about after you are done playing it, either planning out in your head what you are going to do next or managing your inventory, or remembering that wild battle where you were surrounded by 8 demons and had to think fast. It seems that whenever I want to come back to a game on GOG, this is the first one I come back to. About 20+ years ago, I played the Playstation version and loved it. But the PC version is that much better, and it is a truly wonderful game with one of the most immersive soundtracks ever put to a video game. A lot of people don't understand this game, and make comparisons to "Torchlight" and such, or calling it a "Diablo Clone". Darkstone does Diablo better than Diablo, and came before Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, and other games that the Diablo game engine spawned. The fact that Torchlight and other similar games exist does not negate this game one bit. You will have fun playing this game. A few things to consider: 1) Planning your adventure and taking the time to get your gear setteled will make for a more enjoyable game play. YES, there are tough monster out there, so use strategy and don't bum rush every boss because you will get smooshed in 2 seconds. 2) You have nearly endless storage in the town. Simply drop stuff you don't want to sell, and you will be able to recover it when you need it. 3) When setting up two characters, make one of them a ranged fighter. 4) Talk to everyone and enjoy the solid and classy voice over talent while getting side quest information. One cool aspect of this game is that much of the game is randomly generated, so each time you start up, its a totally different world. 5) There are some audio bugs where the background music skips...like a scratched CD. Just deal with it like we did back-in-the-day! 6) Set up your mouse sensitivity and get to know your hot keys. 7) Save often, carry a lot of potions, and check the blacksmith often for new gear.
This is one of the great arcade shooters with some hilarious voice overs and tons of explosions and bullets and everything you want in a space shooter. 5 stars for the game itself! However, this particular version on GOG has no controller support. Only keyboard. It is a total drag trying to play this game with a keyboard. This is 2022! Let's get some controller support as the game listing states. Until then, I cannot recommend this game on GOG at any price. It's just not playable
Fast passed, challenging, and very cool concept. This is a Defender-style shooter, under water ala Jaws for NES, and some cool music. 5 star addictive shooter. This is not a game for people who want an easy walk in the park. Normal level is a challenge. It should work well on W10. Also, you have to unlock each new level by succeeding at the previous one, like Bionic Commando or Super Mario World. Each level is harder than the next. You have two weapons, a regular bullet that has unlimited ammo and a machine gun that has limited ammo that recharges after a few seconds. It's great. It's fun. It's not for wimps. It has cats. I love it. Wish they made a sequel!
