Looking at my username it is very easy to understand that this review will be heavily biased. At the time I joined GOG Duke Nukem 3D wasn't released or announced, but I needed a funny username regarding old computergames, so the Duke came directly to my mind. Who could know the running gag Duke Nukem Forever will ever end, me not. Anyway, why did I directly thought of the Duke while thinking of good old games? The answer is that the Duke isn't just an old game, he represents for me the typical old hollywood action hero movies, especially Die Hard with John McCane: a good mix of action and fun, which took oneself not too seriously, but also did not the failure to become a bad slapstick comedy or too mindless. There are a few puzzles, but they are not so hard that you need longer breaks to solve them. Like most old first person shooter the focus is on action. While the voice, the sound effects, the weapons and especially the music are great I would say the graphics are something for lovers, because the models are not really three-dimensional - as far as I remember you will never see the back of a mutant. The good news is that there is a port called eDuke and a high resolution patch, which lets you play the game natively under Windows with much better graphics. The use of both really solves this issue and gives the game a great new look while nothing of the great atmosphere gets lost. So, if you want to enjoy some hours of funny action and want to see John McCane fighting some mutants or aliens I can highly recommend to take a closer look: It's fun, it's action and it's not complete mindless - like a good old hollywood action movie.
