No Man's Sky

Initial thoughts

So far so good. Enjoying the exploration and amazed by the procedural generation. I realise the optimisation is an issue, but for me I have set everything to medium quality and, turned off AA and V-Sync (the usual culprits) and the game is perfectly playable (note: my rig is not cutting edge). And, to be honest, it looks pretty good. I remember playing Elite First Encounters, back in the day, and was super excited that you could travel down to planets, but in actuality it never worked very well; I don't know how many times I exited hyperspace too late and disintegrated when I hit the planet, and when I eventually landed, it looked terrible! No Man's sky... Well, it works like a dream. Seriously, it just works. And the visuals, sound and ambience are spot on. For me, this is the kind of game that I've dreamed of playing since being a kid (of the Star Wars generation), and so far I'm finding the pure scope of the thing astounding. I've yet to try trading, dogfighting, combat, and I've yet to really get into the crafting elements, but based on what I've seen so far, the four stars are well deserved.
