Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition

One of my favorites

Some 20 years ago my first PC (133 mhz, 1.2 gb hdd, 32 MB ram) wasn't good enough to run Baldur's Gate properly and i was sad, until a friend of mine gave me the CD of the original Icewind Dale - and i fell in love with it! The game is great, giving good overview of the D&D system, and in the same time being more combat oriented and fast paced than BG - less quests, no decisions, no annoying struggles between the party members -and while i prefer BG 1&2, Icewind Dale found a place in my heart. Now about the Enhanced Edition - it looks better than the original, have the class kits added for more character creation options, so i was happy to buy it and play it again. Pros: - A lot of action - Game runs great on solid gaming PC, doesn't look that older compared to the modern isometric RPG's (Pillars of Eternity or Pathfinder:Kingmaker to name a few) - More character creation options than the vanilla version - All (two) DLC's included - Great sound and music - Even if the story is bland and gameplay - linear, there is some good writing in the quests and books you can find in game - User interface feels better than the original Cons: - A bit buggy. I had a lot of troubles going from one place to another, as often the game is saying that you "have to gather your party", even if all of them are already gathered on the exit. - Also one of the last fights seems to be not coded quite right, but it's still doable - The game feels somehow easier than the original. If i remember correctly 20 years ago my party wasn't literally swarmed with good magic items - The story is really linear, so absolutely no replayability

Iratus: Lord of the Dead

Morbid, not too hard misery simulator

I am following the game since i saw the first alpha preview and i bough it on release. Here what i can say after about 50 hours in the game: + really nice graphics + cool units and synergies between them + the combat is faster than DD + some replayability value + interesting boss fights + not as hard as Darkest Dungeon and the cons: - a bit too short ( i finished it on the lowest difficulty the first time i started the game) - not as hard as Darkest Dungeon - not balanced. There are too many cookie cutter builds and OP items - the music could be better and the undead moaning and grows are really boring after the first hour - almost on the price of AAA title and we also have 10$ DLC with only 1 unit as a bonus? I gave 4 stars, but if i could, i would give 3 and a half. The game is fun and addictive, but it could be way better

Delta Force 2

More of the same, but somehow worse

I wasn't able to recall why i liked the first game much more 20 years ago, so i tried again and well...i still like the first game way more Prons: - more weapons - more missions - wider variety of mission goals Cons: - but you won't use most of them - but still the same empty levels - but in most missions you can kinda ignore the goals and just kill the bad guys - UI is somehow really not that user friendly - crashing way too often on win 10

Battle Brothers - Warriors of the North

My new favorite game

After i spend 150+ hours playing BB in the last three or so weeks, i can surery say that this is my new favorite game and one of the best games i played ever, since someone gave me a portable Tetris console about 30 years ago. The RPG element is really light, all quests are simple and there is no real difference in the choises you make, but anyway i have never considered as a true RPG game. The unit/characted builds are simple, yet giving an option for dozens of viable builds - there is not cookie cutters, nor really wrong way to develop your fighters, so you can adjust everything to your playstyle. I, for example, like to have my roster separated eavenly between archers with just a bit of skill in handling polearms, using all possible debufs (injury, overwhelm and fearsome perks), shield bros using one hand axes and hammers and 2h berserks using swords and axes. And it works - i was able to win a bettle against 9 alps without loosing single bro, same with 3 lundworms, even if most pro players are saying that this is not an good build. And yes, when i reach 10 000 renown with this band, ill start from the scratch again, maybe trying using more barbarian/orc weapons or few duelists, or why not having the whole roster with some ranged attack skills, peltering the enemy with 12 bows between reaching melee range? Long story short - i love this game, i am recomending it and i can't wait for the new expansion later this year

Delta Force

Blast from the past

About 20 years ago when i played Delta Force for first time, i have fallen in love with the game in no time. It was something new, fresh, the tactical combat, use of snipers, the missions you can either finish with stealth approach or going fill Leroy Jenkins (the late being more effective in most cases)...oh, it was really good. In 2019 the game still have some of it's charms, but with all way better FPS games from the last two decades and me being in my mid-thirties, i really can't say that this is a must play title, even out of pure nostalgia. Pros: + Killing dozens of south american, mid east and soviet terrorists is as fun as ever + Some of the single campaign missions are really nice to play - the ones in which you have to destroy whole convoy of enemies with the minigun or the one where you have to escort Indonesia's president limo and save him from literally hundreds of attacking infantry units and few 4x4's... + It's cheaper than a cup of fancy coffee Cons: - While the graphics weren't really breathtaking even when the game hit the market (as, if i remember correctly, the first demos of Unreal and Half-Life were available), today the game looks really ugly on 24' and there is nothing my 2080 can do to improve it - Not that the multy player ever was the strongest part of the game, but today is really dead unless you set-up a lan party - The enemies have virtually no AI, often they are just freezing at one place or glitching at some corner. This doesn't stop them from one shoting you now and then. Your NPC squad mates aren't any smarter, so i have died from friendly fire few times during the campaign - Only 4 weapons (and only one of them is really useful, the old trusty M4) - No replay ability at all (well, maybe in 20 more years ill install it again) Delta Force did gave me few fun nostalgic hours, but i really can't recommend it and it was deleted from my HDD as soon as i finished the last mission

Fallout 2

The start of long-lasting love

Back in 1999 Fallout 2 was the first ever RPG game i played, and opened for me the gates of a whole new world. Now some 20 years later i have downloaded the GOG version and oh,boy - the game, even with it's flaws, is still great. Now, about the GOG release - it runs fine on Win 10, i have tried the Hi-Res launcher but didn't saw some real difference. And i got game crashes two or three times during my run ( i did an optimal character run on Twitch) but it's OK for a 20 years old game. For sure 5 out of 5 start and will play it again in few years with my kids
