The story is spectacular at times and boring as hell at others. Mostly high marks to be fair. Secondary quests are pretty cool mostly I would say. Now, there is this thing called 'contracts' and 'treasure hunts'...boring as f***. I just tended to avoid treasure hunts altogether and did several contracts before recognising it's just same s***. With the amount of walking you need to do in the game including the little fast travel doodads...hell no! Follow scent of this or trail of that...no! In principle great, but fell flat on the face since it's not done much more tactfully. Character development was somehow much more satisfying in the second instalment and even in the first. The expansions were pretty cool, the one with Gaunter O'Dimm is very cool and the other one is pretty good as well but I kinda lost interest by the time I had to water my vineyard and whatnot. Gwent was my favourite thing about the game. Enjoyed that more than anything else. Voice acting was tedious at times with all of that 'medieval peasant' accent. Mostly excellent with a heaping pile of bad (for my tastes) so it gets four stars from me. I think that's fair.
Right off the bat, the combat is really satisfying. The first act is perfection and sadly drops down from there but not significant enough to drop stars. Same protagonist as the first instalment which is a shame, would have much preferred to play as Letho. Some stupid decisions by the creators (which is kind of a constant throughout the series) but once again not enough to drop stars. Best one in the series I thought.
Solid game but my no means a masterpiece, it struck me as a mashup of more things that I would like. Combat is cool in principle but in execution quite boring and uninspired. Not a big fan of the protagonist and sadly that is a constant throughout the series. But, as I said...it does get better.
And keep in mind I'm not going to go on about this version or the original version so long as I have A version to play I'm happy because BG2 is one of the most important games. If you consider yourself a lover of video games and this game is not in your arsenal, something's wrong.
This thing is everything I adore in a game: cyberpunk, tense, spooky, moody, dystopic. Looks lovely, no gripes with game mechanics and the story is pretty fantastic too. Focuses on atmosphere, exploration and immersion rather than chasy monsters which is right up my alley. Didn't feel to short nor too long. Builds tension in very cool ways. Really hope for a next instalment which I suppose is highest praise in a way.
