You might think this is an overstatement, but truth is that Star Control 2 is a underrated gem, and one of the best space adventures known to man. Star Control 1 is ok, and it gets the game mechanics going on quite nicely, but if you're playing it just for the melee, then go straight to Star Control 2. What Star Control 1 have that the sequel doesn't is a nice strategy game, that if you can get past the awkwardness of the pseudo 3D map, turns out to be quite enjoyable. Other than that, Star Control 2 is a much better game, and as you might have already noticed my all time favorite. This game oozes atmosphere, and the story is very well written. Besides, the gameplay is also quite engaging and fun. If you dont care about the story, then just gather some friends and Super Melee is guaranteed to give you hours of mindless fun! Please note that as others have stated, Star Control 2 is available freely under the name "The Ur-Quan Masters" and it is a better version than the original PC one, but just because GOG took the risk of releasing it nevertheless, they deserve my gratitude and the 6 bucks. If "The Ur-Quan Masters" was bundled with this pack... it would just be the perfect pack.
If you like Space Sims, you probably already know Wing Commander. If you don't, then you should look into it, because this realy is the stuff of Legend. Even if the gameplay has aged a bit, the story itself is worth one or two playthroughs. Pity they didn't seem to include the four expansions, as they are preety rare and probably most of the players (even the older ones) hadn't had the opportunity to try them out. Even though it was kind of a missed opportunity, don't let it keep you from buying this wonderful games.
