I guess there are some redeeming features about this game, but after just having played Arkham Asylum this turned out to be a huge disappointment. Asylum had small levels, they were very good to read, you always knew what to do. Here you have a huge city, but everything looks the same, it's hard to know where to go next. The map doesn't really help that much. This isn't really an open world sandbox, so this doesn't work in the game's favour. Asylum did it's locations much better. Another huge critizism I have to add to the save system. In Asylum it also had only autosaves, but they were fair. Here you enter a building, see a cut scene, have a huge brawl, watch another cut scene, and then the game doesn't save. It saves about five minutes later or when you do something that the game seems save-worthy. No, using an upgrade point isn't it. I had to find out the hard way. After a long fight, after seeing the cutscenes and upgrading my armour I quit and went to work. When I came back I had to do everything over again. That's not fun. From this point on my eyes were only glued to the savesymbol, when can I quit the game and when am I forced to continue. This game could have been great. Like Asylum. But sadly they screwed it up. But I'm alone with my opinion I guess. The ratings are over the top. But you are warned, this game has lots of frustration potential. If that's your cup of tea, go ahead. There is fun to be had here if you are that person.
As the title says, this has almost the exact gameplay mechanics as SS2, starting with the inventory up to the hacking, collecting stuff, using weapon upgrades, upgrading abilities, multiple solutions/ways to solve problems and so on and so on. Bioshock was, at least for me, always a dissapointment. The mechanics were dumbed down, I think to make the controls on consoles a little easier. Prey is not. So if you are interested in waking up on a space station, overrun with monsters, and sinister things happening all around you, this is it! The only thing missing is Shodan!
I guess out of political correctness they removed three levels (if I remember correctly). And a nude picture that hung on a wall. It's a fun game if you don't know the original, but Jesus Christ, why? What's wrong with people nowadays?? Not worth the price. Thankfully I got it for free since I own the originals, otherwise I would be much more angry.
I liked the old games, up from Larry 1 to Larry 7. They all were politically incorrect, had dirty (and infantile) humor, and fun locations and situations. This newest edition has it too. Of course there are now hot girls with weird sexual preferences, gay people, hipster people, drag queens, smartphones, computers with more than 64 kb of RAM. And the game has fun with all of that! It's refreshing and a nice time travel back to the 80s, a time where everything was possible and not every second person so easily offended. Also, the game, as politically incorrect as it is, never shows an evil side or delves into hate speech. It just pokes fun at it. The puzzles are usually good, with enough subtle hints how to solve what. There are a few moon logic puzzles, but they are rare. So overall a good sequel to one of the true heroes of computer game history. Oh, and you can't die. Thank god! Even if you die you can start over where it happened, like in Larry 6. Great!
Be warned. This game is old, and it shows. The graphics still are ok, thanks to the comic look. But the controls are clunky at best, and the game, even on easy is pretty unforgiving. I remember having played it back in the days, only finishing it half way through. So I wanted to give it another shot, but stopped after one hour. What kills this game for me in the end is the missing save function. Checkpoints in an old shooter are a no go. So, if you have enough time to try sections of the game multiple times, then maybe give it a try, the story is pretty well told. But if you're like me and don't have time to sink in a game like you were 15 years old, then better think twice. Btw, after trying this game I installed Doom again, my reflexes are still fine. It really are those controls.
It's not really the Duke, Caleb or Wang. But it tries hard and does many things right. If you didn't know it you might think this game would be from those times. It's fun! If you like those old school shooters, chances are good you might like this one! The developers on the other side... well, they knew what kind of game they were doing, and what time period they tried to imitate. That's why I don't understand they immediatly gave in when the first people called them out for political incorrectness. So keep in mind that future updates might remove "offensive" content. But with gog Galaxy you can always go back to 1.0 which is uncensored. But I'm rating only the game here (version 1.0), I'm personally not a fan of review bombing, and four out of five stars is absolutely ok. More variety in enemy design and weapons and it would have been the five star rating.
