Lacks behind

My biggest beef with the game is, that the version on GOG is 1.3 (Jan 2023) whereas a certain other platform is already on 1.5 which offers significant improvements and added content. This game is a chill exploration and survival simulator. The survival aspects however have been toned down very much. It is difficult to die in this game. That fits the general chill undertone very well. Ore, science and food nodes on the map refill over night every night. It is hard to run out of stuff. Pros: * Chill game. Perfect to play while watching your favourite show. * Thanks to the simple but nice graphics the game runs on older machines no problem. * Fairly large map with lots interesting places to find. * YOU CAN PET THE DOGS! Neutral: * The game has definitely a bit of a grind going on. Resource nodes yield little material so you have to find a lot of it to upgrade your gear. Cons: * As mentioned above GOG has only a older version of the game. * The UI is a mess. The icon are all over the place. That is maybe related to the old version as well. * Some parts seem to be unfinished, i.e. there is a functional slider on the ore processor thats does absolutely nothing (yet). Again older version maybe. * Exploration is not always adequately rewarded. Often you only find money or seed packets at an otherwise interesting looking wreck or ruin. Conclusion: A simple exploration game with simple but pretty enough graphics. The challenge is low, which is in favor of the relaxed general atmosphere. I can recommend it even in its current state.

Dome Keeper

Instant indie gem

This game knows exactly what it wants to be and does not get distracted along the way. The devs perfected the core gameplay loop and do not mess with much beside. No story, no dialogue, just pure fun gameplay. The visuals are crisp and fit the tone. Although you have to like pixelart of course. The game lacks a little bit of replayability. In it's current state you have two playable characters and several different dome types to choose from. The characters play very differently but I really haven't figured out the meta game for the second. So I'm stuck with the first a little bit. In addition you can modify your different runs substantially by choosing different upgrades that pop up during gameplay. So thats interesting for everyone who likes to experiment and optimize. This is also where a lot of the difficulty level comes from. Depending on the updgrades you choose the runs can get pretty hard. But after five to six hours the game becomes a little bit repetetive. From what I've heard the devs however have already lined up some pretty cool new content that will drop in the not too distant future. Conclusion: I highly recommend this game. But with less than 10 hours it is a little short for my liking so only four stars from me.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Beautiful game, but uneven difficulty

There is no other way to say it: This game is stunningly beautiful, as is the music. A 2D-platformer / Metroidvania with tight controls and a cute and occasionally sad story. That are the good parts. The reason why I am only giving it three stars is the steep difficulty curve. The game starts out really pleasant and relatively easy and introduces new things at a good pace. I thought "I this is kept up, this will become one of my favorite games." But THEN, after the third movement upgrade (the double-jump if I recall correctly) you suddenly hit a wall. Suddenly you are supposed to deliver pin-point accuracy and almost perfect timing to dodge all the nasty stuff, the game throws at you. Over and over again. I felt more reminded of games like Super Meat Boy than one that seems to be aimed at kids or an older and more relaxed audience. At this point the game felt too exhausting and I stopped playing. Maybe this is a game for people with higher tolerance for frustration. But not for me.

Looking for Aliens

Mixed Bag

The first two thirds are fun varied. Sometimes you are on a concert, a Rocket launch site, a city attacked by a Godzilla-knockoff - you name it. I particularly like how some objects are interconnected. You have to find them in order to reveal the next step and new objects. However the color palette makes it sometimes a little bit hard to find what you are looking for. That is especially true in the later levels. Sadly these later levels are just tedious. Huge areas crowded with hundreds of moving people where you have to zoom in and scan the areas bit by bit. And even then you overlook what you are looking for. So a big recommendation for the first two thirds. The last bit does not hold up however.

A Short Hike

Perfect for a relaxed afternoon

This game is really special. It quickly creates a beautiful little world with soothing gameplay and a lot of pleasant ideas. The main focus is exploring this world. Luckily you are never in a rush to do anything here - maybe with the exception of the optional race with one of the characters. Your character can't die. The worst setback you'll experience is when you fall down somewhere and you have to repeat a part an area - and that is not much of a punishment. There are so many cute little ideas, details and little side quests that really draw you into this game. And you can finish it in one sitting easily if you wish to do so. Or you an try and find every little secret and spend several more hours with it. And yes: You can adjust the graphics to look less blocky. This is one of the games I would let my own child play without supervision or reservations.

Hidden Through Time

Kick back and relax

Cute little game with a lot of content whent you wish to take a break from lifes hardship. The game does not press you into achieving 100%. If you can't find all hidden items you can still progress to the next level which are cute and varied and get more and more complex over time of course. The game does a lot to NOT stress you. When progressing to the next era you're introduced into the new graphic set with less complex levels. The game even follows a inner logic which helps you to find the objects, i.e. you'll probably find an axe near some freshly chopped wood. It's one of these games you can put in front of a five-year-old child without reservations. Cons: The music is a bit repetetive so it had to turn it off after a while and put on my own.

Agent A: A puzzle in disguise

Nice and simple

This is bascially a simplified adventure game. The game is divided into several screens or rooms where you need to find items and combine them. The puzzle design is very reminiscent of escape rooms. Sometimes you have to simply combine things. On other occasions there are patterns to be aligned or simple codes to be deciphered. A camera or pen and paper are very sensible things to have at hand. While the game is not terribly long it is a nice and relaxing experience for two or three evenings with a friend or a loved one. My only gripe is that it is sometimes a little difficult to find all items in a screen. A highlight function would have been a welcome addition.
