Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

+ story and environments, - many details

A lot of people say this is a completely bug infested mess. To be honest I encountered no real bugs, at least what I remember now, a few months later. It seems most of them have been taken care of. That's not to say the game is well made. The more fundamental flaws are I guess not that easy to get rid off. It didn't feel like they play tested it enough. At least one or two areas are ridiculously difficult. I got stuck at a car chase scene. Watching some youtubers play it to see if I did something completely wrong, one of them said that this part of the game is more or less luck based. Just grind and grind, do your best, hope for good RNG and watch that horribly annoying cut scene time after time. It didn't feel like they play tested this part. Luckily it's not that long but it took me a few hours to get past it. I'm just saying, so that if anyone gets stuck at the same place, just keep at it. Except for that and some small details the game is good. Great story. I've read almost everything by HPL and think they got much of the atmosphere right here, at least in the beginning. The enemy AI is awful and kills a lot of the feeling later on. Despite that the game is worth playing for the parts in between.

Not made for PC?

In the early parts of the game, some symbols like X, O, □ and ∆ are used to show what you need to do. Feels like it was made for console and only after released on PC. I don't care about those few symbols in the beginning but the controls themselves are worse. For a game with as much focus on precision as this, it's just frustrating using the keyboard. Difficulty level on the puzzles are OK and no problems but they require a lot of precision and the controls are not up for the task. I stopped playing when a puzzle destroyed itself twice. When giving various hanging boxes different charges, they clumped together and went out of reach. Had to go back about a min for the puzzle to reset. Then it happened again. Since it anyway was more frustrating than anything I decided to quit. Pretty graphics, nice way of storytelling, good ideas and mechanics etc but very poor controls and too much focus on making more or less frame perfect jumps. I would have preferred figuring out the puzzles to be more difficult. As a whole the game is frustrating.

Little Nightmares: Secrets of the Maw Expansion Pass

All the DLCs. Lots of puzzles

This contains all the DLCs for Little Nightmares. I saw someone comment elsewhere that GOG doesn't have all the DLCs. Steam has two additional ones listed. But while they are not listed separately or mentioned as on Steam, they are included in this expansion pass. And anyway those two are just some different hats you may choose to use. I don't know if they impact the game play or not. But they are included here. As for the game, it's good. Very similar to the main game. Nice to see more of the environments etc but it feels a bit like they focused too much on making the different chapters fit to some themes. First chapter theme: water puzzles. Second chapter theme: nome puzzles. Third chapter theme: i would spoil it if i wrote it here. If you really enjoyed the main game and want to know more about the world, go for it. Just beware that most of the game play is made out of puzzles. There's not that much going on story or exploration wise.

Just ignore the story

The story leaves much to ask for. You need to save all the women of your town, who have been abducted by an evil wizard. While what is going on at different times may be better, zoomed out and seen as a whole the story is never very interesting. I was surprised to really enjoy the game despite of that. Just wanting to give it a try for nostalgia (having played this game as a kid) I became more or less absorbed and finished the game in a few days. Exploration is great. Non linear, branching paths, hidden bosses and lots of secret treasures etc. The exploration part is very well designed! It was long since I enjoyed exploring as much as I did playing this. Many of the skills and magics are really fun to use. There's a lot of different one's to find. Design, variation and atmosphere is great. Just try to listen to some of the music on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0sONxLhZLo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8oy1iZsMrM I'd definitely give it a try if you're just looking for something really fun, simple and relaxing. If a good story is that important for you, just read some book after to compensate for the lack of a good story here. Also, there is a bell puzzle that hasn't aged well. It solved differently on these new fast computers compared to the old one's. When you reach the bell puzzle, google the solution. Your computer will most likely be too fast for you to solve it as it was intended.

Decent but one of wadjeteye's worse

The main problem is how political the game is. It feels like a half baked revolutionary tale with some gender theory and other SJW-things sprinkled over it. It's not extreme in any sense but sometimes peeps out and does some harm to the story, atmosphere and believability. Example quotes "Strong women make the best leaders" and "I'm going out for fresh air" (by the father, as his wife is giving birth and is in a very bad situation, needing help). Other times, people are excused for things such as stealing and bullying as they are poor. There are many small things like this but they never dominate completely. Many won't even notice. As a swede I've become kind of allergic to SJW stuff like this. Others not constantly bombarded may find it less annoying. None the less the game isn't that great, even if I'd agreed with the philosophy. The character design is the worst of the wadjeteye games I've played. Just looks ridiculous with these wigged french revolution era inspired guards and politicians. Makes no sense. People are not stupid. They don't need things to be that obvious to get that there are some parallels. Puzzles are the easiest in any of the wadjeteye's I've played, by a fair margin. It was kind of nice to for once play one of their games without getting stuck but overall I prefer the puzzles to be more difficult. The music is good. The game is varied. The design overall, besides from half of the characters, is great. Good length. Lots of extras for those who likes commentary tracks etc (I think there were 3 different commentary tracks, by designer, musicians, director etc). I liked the way you skip between screens. It gets a 3/5 for being a fun game. It would have been a solid 3 had the game been less political. Now it's a rather weak 3. 6 hours playtime. Worth it on a sale.

The Shivah

Surprisingly good (and short)

Interesting with a game that takes on jewish culture like this. A few taboo topics handled naturally and without it feeling forced. Overall a good story and especially in that sense. Most of the puzzles are good but there is one exception. It seems like a lot of people get stuck on it and i did too. The solution is very far fetched. I think I'd have preferred fewer possible endings. They are kind of similar anyway. But the game is short enough ( probably around 30 min on a second play through) for anyone to see them all without spending a lot of time.

The Dream Machine

Interesting title but with flaws

Overall I think the game is great and very varied. The various dreams don't only differ in how they look but in how they are played. While some are very much puzzles others resemble traditional adventure games more. Some of the dreams surprised and impressed me quite a bit. Others were less interesting. I'd put a 7/10. Some small problems like what a previous review mentioned, that at times dialogues and comments are a bit stiff or dull. For me the bigger problem was how at times it was impossible to tell if i was in a place where a puzzle had to be solved or not. I used a guide sometimes to check if i was just wasting my time somewhere i wasn't supposed to be at. I also used a guide sometimes when i got stuck. Overall a good difficulty level but at times the puzzles get a bit far fetched. Creepy and very different.

GRIS

Pretty but poor levels, mechanics etc

I played it through in a three sittings despite finishing the game in 3 hours 15 minutes. The previous sitting was nine days ago. The last one just now. I was relieved to have reached the end. Then increasingly worried, as it seemed the game would keep dragging on. It's extremely pretty and at times a good game. However, as much as it's pretty it's boring and bland. If it looked like Super Mario no one would give it even a 3/5. Or perhaps they would, but because of the music. The level design is poor. Most places look more or less the same and play out in more or less the same way. Because it's kind of semi-linear at times it's very confusing finding the right place to go, as the world is constantly changing with the new colors added to it.Puzzle design poor. Mostly just the same few puzzles repeated time after time but with minor twists. Pretty much nothing happens throughout the game. I'm relieved to have finished it. Not to say I didn't enjoy it. Parts of it were good. I'd recommend playing it before sleeping.

Tormentum: Dark Sorrow

Weak 3

The artwork is good and the game is imaginative. Game play is simple and you'll rarely get stuck. It's great that many puzzles are actual logic puzzles, even though they are usually too easy. It's not too long either. What I didn't like is the atmosphere. I believed it would be the game's main strength but instead it's one of the main weaknesses. At least I get a bit thrown off when suddenly I have to play a game of memory (the board game) to solve a puzzle in some kind of forgotten tomb. Memory just brings memories of childhood to me. It's the last game except for Monopoly I'd expect to play in hell. They made several such strange choices that ruin the atmosphere. Dialogue is mostly kind of bad too. It may partially be because of the translator. I just think a lot of it sounds like bad poetry. See one of the screen shots here on the product page for an example. "It is easier for a thousand crows to fly through a fiery mountain than it is for you to pass safely through my entrails, wretched human!" A lot of the dialogue is similar. None of the dialogue sounds natural to me. The characters are all extremely flat even if the dialogue had been good. I wouldn't buy it except for during a sale and/or if you feel drawn to the visual art style. At times it's a solid 3 but most of the time it feels kind of bland. I'm very close to give it a 2.
