Missing the cutscenes. Arcade only
I only really got this game because it was less than a buck and originated the famous meme that went around, turns out that this is just a port of the arcade version, which does have prettier spritework and background art during the gameplay, but doesn't have the cutscenes. I think this might be an issue since looking up the cutscene showed a mildly fixed version of the dialogue with completely horrendous pixel art of the cutscene for the steam version. Looking at the genesis pal cutscene where it originated has genuinely beautiful cutscenes with a much more interesting lean into the gameplay as well as in my opinion better stage music than this arcade version. So I feel rather ripped off that I got a different version of what I expected to be the thing everyone talked about, an old arcadey shootem up with a story that ended up having what seemed to be no story that also really doesn't have much to it? Actually getting to the gameplay it's just a standard shootemup but the upgrades seem to fall on only going for homing while the speed upgrade actually hinders your accuracy of movement which is demanded for the game which just makes it a suicidal powerup to pick up. I think the vacuum ability to pick up enemies to shield you from a single shot or to launch at other enemies is a neat idea, but you never ever really want to throw the objects unless you're that certain you can dodge everything which is unlikely with the speed, or maybe you vacuumed up a bomb which acts as a partial area clear if it touches the environment or a shot or if you die. It really is just overall a lacking unfair arcade game that also ripped out the cultural relevance without providing that information in the description. It genuinely is confusing to me why they didn't just even include it as an extra or both versions of the game. If you really do have fond memories and want to play this again, or you're that desperate for just an unfair shootem up with some fun pixel art I guess this is for you. If this caught your interest because you know it's the "base belong to us" game or you thought this might have some underlying mechanics that would be interesting to see in a shootem up, this isn'tfor you.
